Biotech hub that includes Notre Dame awarded $51M in CHIPS Act funding

The U.S. Department of Commerce and its Economic Development Administration (EDA) has announced $51 million in federal funding to support the implementation of Heartland Bioworks, a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub that includes among its members the University of Notre Dame.
Nitesh Chawla, the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and founding director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, serves as Notre Dame’s lead on the BioWorks Hub.

The Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society seeks nominations for our annual Lucy Societal Impact Awards (“The Lucies“) to recognize individuals or teams whose work exemplifies the Institute’s vision to inspire collaborative, equitable, and impactful data innovations as a global force for good.
Work should include significant contributions within the civic, industry, academic, or research arena with impact at either the regional (South Bend/Elkhart) or global (United States and beyond) level.

| Civic Data Literacy for Libraries: A Civic Switchboard Institute project

Join Matthew Sisk, associate professor of the practice in the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, and Katherine Walden, associate teaching professor in the Department of American Studies for the Civic Data Literacy for Libraries: A Civic Switchboard Institute project.
This project, hosted by regional partners, is for library workers who are interested in serving as intermediaries between community members and civic data and developing civic data roles for their libraries.
Attendees will discover critical dimensions of data work, including power, social justice, and responsible data practices to mitigate harms, and will help to improve civic data educational materials for a library audience.
