Your college years are all about learning, connecting and building your future — but scammers can turn your semester upside down. College students are often targeted in clever (and sometimes convincing) scams. Here’s what to look out for — and how to protect yourself.
|
-
Fake job offers: Someone who says they are an employer or professor contacts you with a high-paying job that sounds too good to be true. They may send a fake check for you to deposit or ask for your bank information and will pressure you to act quickly. Verify any job offer through your campus career services or UIC Handshake.
-
Email phishing: You get an email that looks like it's from your school or a familiar brand. It says your account is locked or needs verification. The link takes you to a page asking for your login info — don’t fall for it! This is a common phishing tactic to steal your login credentials.
-
Text message phishing (smishing): You get a random text from a shipping company, a bank or even someone claiming to be from your school, asking you to click a link or reply with personal info. Be careful when clicking links to fake SMS text messages (smishing) that try to steal sensitive information or money.
-
Cybersecurity awareness: Awareness can be your best defense. Learn how to recognize scams and see real examples encountered on campus at UIC Cyberguard, your go-to source for staying updated on cyber scams. Remember to report suspicious emails to security@uic.edu.
