Listening Sessions on Racism at BYM Annual Session 2020
In the weeks leading up to this year’s Annual Session our country has experienced the greatest outcry for social justice, change, and an end of racism in 50 years. Many Friends are hearing this cry with re-awakened ears. Feelings run from hope to fear, from frustration to engaged action. The Program Committee which plans Annual Session, in consultation with other groups, believes it would be a gift to our community to listen deeply to one another, to hear the breadth of experience and depth of wisdom among us.
To enable this listening we are inviting all Friends -- not just those participating in other Annual Session programs -- to register for one or more Listening Sessions. The first will be held on Sunday, July 26, from 7-8:30 pm. The second will be held on Friday, July 31, from 1:30-3:00 pm. Both will be held virtually, on Zoom.
These listening sessions will be clerked and held in the spirit of worship-sharing. While we hope they prompt conversations during our Annual Session, they are not designed to be spaces for conversations, but rather for deep listening.
As you may have seen from the agenda for our business meetings, as well as other announcements, there is a great deal of action and activity on racial justice happening in BYM. What we feel is missing is a simple opportunity to share what is on our hearts and minds, and listen, with care, to one another. Our hope is that this may prepare us to do further work, both during Annual Session and beyond, in furthering the cause of justice.
