Listening Sessions on Racism at BYM Annual Session 2020
In the weeks leading up to this year’s Annual Session our country has experienced the greatest outcry for social justice, change, and an end of racism in 50 years. Many Friends are hearing this cry with re-awakened ears. Feelings run from hope to fear, from frustration to engaged action. The Program Committee which plans Annual Session, in consultation with other groups, believes it would be a gift to our community to listen deeply to one another, to hear the breadth of experience and depth of wisdom among us.
To enable this listening we are inviting all Friends -- not just those participating in other Annual Session programs -- to register for one or more Listening Sessions. The first will be held on Sunday, July 26, from 7-8:30 pm. The second will be held on Friday, July 31, from 1:30-3:00 pm. Both will be held virtually, on Zoom.
These listening sessions will be clerked and held in the spirit of worship-sharing. While we hope they prompt conversations during our Annual Session, they are not designed to be spaces for conversations, but rather for deep listening.
As you may have seen from the agenda for our business meetings, as well as other announcements, there is a great deal of action and activity on racial justice happening in BYM. What we feel is missing is a simple opportunity to share what is on our hearts and minds, and listen, with care, to one another. Our hope is that this may prepare us to do further work, both during Annual Session and beyond, in furthering the cause of justice.
Everyone must register to participate in either or both of these sessions, and you will be sent the zoom link the day before the session. If you have not yet registered for Annual Session 2020, you can include either or both sessions in your registration. If you have already registered, please click here to indicate which session you would like to add to your registration.
First Time Attender Orientation!
Orientations for First Time Attenders at Annual Session will be held Thursday, July 23, 2-3 pm, and Saturday, July 25, 1-2 pm. Those registered as first time attenders will receive an email invitation with links to both meeting times, and are free to attend either that fits their schedule.
Worship Sharing and Bible Study
During Annual Session Friends will be gathering each morning at 8:30 (Wednesday through Saturday) for Bible Study or for Worship Sharing in one of several different formats.
Worship Sharing will gather each day around the queries for the day, which are based on the theme of Annual Session. As well as traditional Worship Sharing, several other formats will be offered: Family Friendly worship, Worship in Unity with Nature, Worship with music led by Ruth Fitz, and Experiment with Light. For all of these, Friends who have registered for morning Worship Sharing will receive the Zoom link. Then you will be sent to the breakout room of your choice.
Bible Study will be a shared exploration of scripture selected to focus on the Annual Session theme. Again this year, we will be using the "Spears" method of Friendly Bible Study. Friends who registered for Bible Study and received the Zoom link will begin as a large group, hear the verses together and then break into small groups for deliberation and discussion.
For both Worship and Bible Study our Tech team hopes to be able to keep small groups together for the week and will give instruction as to how to enable that choice.
Approval-Ready Business Items? Get Ready for Annual Session!
For the first time, this year we will use a “list of approval-ready business items” (also known as a “consent agenda”).  All items that can be considered as ready for approval without further discussion at Annual Session will be placed on this proposed list.  This is a key tool that will help us get through our business given that we will have so much less time for business meeting at our Virtual Annual Session. For this to work, we need your help in preparing these items and ensuring that they really are approval-ready.
An explanation of how this will work was shared in the Advance Documents and can be found at https://bit.ly/BYM2020ApprvRdy. The written reports supporting these items are live documents in the cloud and may change as Friends offer questions and comments about them. Changes will be tracked. Please take a look at them soon so there is time to consider any input that you might provide on them. Then please look at them the week of Annual Session as well to see if they've changed.
