Red Raider Orientation at the Huckabee College of Architecture (HCOA) kicked off earlier this summer and is now full steam ahead into the latter half of the program. Over the past two months, more than 200 future-undergraduate students have made their way through the halls of our college in preparation for the 2023-2024 academic year. With 150 more students expected to attend by mid-August, this is the HCOA's largest incoming first year cohort we've seen at the HCOA in 5 years. Red Raider Orientation provides our incoming architecture students and their families the opportunity to walk through our facilities and meet with the incredible student assistants, faculty, and staff that will help them prepare for their first semester of classes at Texas Tech University.
Highlights from this week's RRO sessions can be found by visiting the Huckabee College of Architecture Instagram page.
The Huckabee College of Architecture's Red Raider Orientation team consists of staff members Sarah Hatley, unit manager; Darrick Wade, Assistant Dean of Students; Amy Peterman, senior academic advisor; Vondee Langehennig, undergraduate advisor; Aaron Smith, student success specialist; and student assistants Derek Williams, Plamedi Kevamviri, Monica Delgadillo, Hector Lopez, Trevor Graham, and Lynsey Lee.
Thank you to our incredible staff, student assistants, and RRO participants for helping make 2023 a record orientation year at the HCOA!

The HCOA campus in El Paso (HCOA-EP) completed its annual Architecture Summer Camp for middle and high school students in June of this year. The camp is a proud tradition and commitment to community-engagement for the El Paso program and offers an enriching experience to kids who are curious about or interested in a future in architecture. The camp is led by the undergraduate students of the HCOA-EP program who are interested in pursuing teaching with a design focus - this year's instructors were Julia Bustamante and Alfonso Fierro. The summer camp includes a design studio component, as well as architecture walks, sketching sessions downtown, site visits to significant buildings, and educational lectures. The program ended on a high note with final presentations from the students given to parents and family members in attendance for the closing event. The students presentations touched on their experiences over the course of the summer camp and the many things they learned about architecture during the week’s activities.

Jaiden Thomas, a second-year student at the Huckabee College of Architecture, was named a recipient of the Architecture Student Scholarship from the Simpson Strong-Tie Company, Inc. The scholarship, awarded in May of 2023, provides funding to full-time undergraduate architecture students to go toward their education-related expenses. Of hundreds of applicants, Thomas was one of only forty students selected. The scholarship also provided him a fellowship opportunity to work with the Simpson Strong-Tie Company and represent the HCOA over the summer in San Francisco, California.
"I'm almost two weeks into the fellowship and I couldn’t be more appreciative... The trip has been such an eye-opening glimpse into the real world and has already provided me with opportunities to network and learn how architects and civil engineers work together on projects... I'm looking forward to what the rest of the summer has in store and I'm so grateful to the Simpson Strong-Tie Company for the opportunity." - Jaiden Thomas, Third-Year Student, Huckabee College of Architecture

Associate Professor Peter Raab's article “Material History” was published in the July/August 2023 issue of Texas Architect magazine. The essay discusses the newly reconstructed Citizens Tower in downtown Lubbock and how the project preserves cultural history, reinvigorates Lubbock’s empty downtown core, and how architects can utilize existing infrastructure for a more sustainable future.
