"I love graphic novels," says Assistant Arts Professor of Visual Arts Monika Lin. "I love graphic stories and I make them, I just haven't ever published them because they tend to be really, really personal. I wanted to bring that to students– that a personal story is deepened by an investigation into some of the adjacent narratives that obviously influence it and are embedded in their own subjectivity."

• On April 24th, NYU Shanghai-ECNU Center on Global History, Economy and Culture (GHEC) hosted a bilingual lecture by Zhang Jishun, Professor of History at ECNU, entitled "The World Has Changed: From St. John's to NYU Shanghai." Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen chaired the event, Professor Chen Jian served as Zhang's interpreter and commentator and Professor Zuo Lala served as another commentator. Zhang reviewed the history of NYU Shanghai's founding, which she was involved in, and compared the process with that of the rise and fall of St. John's University during the first half of the 20th century. She argued that by casting away the "American centrism" that plagued St. John’s, NYU Shanghai embraces a more global while also more "local" approach, and thus can achieve the University's mission of "making the world your major." The event attracted more than 70 community members both onsite and via Zoom.

“Showboat was the grand-daddy of all American musicals. Before that they barely talked about serious social issues within their art. With Showboat, they talked about miscegenation, racism, and social issues in a very serious way. Musicals had generally been called musical comedies, but after Showboat, people started calling them musical theater.”
— -Clinical Assistant Professor of Arts Gabriel Song speaking on the Golden Age of Broadway musicals
