The General Education Committee on Assessment & Policy, the General Education Director, and the Center for Teaching and Learning are pleased to co-host an event on the Information and Technological Literacy (ITL) Learning Outcome. We will review the elements of this outcome and explain how we use the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) value rubrics to assess students’ progress on it.

Please attend if you are teaching, will teach, or are merely interested in teaching a General Education course with this learning outcome. You don't need to be a General Education Instructor to attend the workshop. All are welcome.

We will also host a general conversation on how we might improve our teaching of this outcome, so please bring any suggestions, exercises, etc., that you have found particularly effective in your courses.

Registration is not required to attend the workshop. However, the registration information will help us to better prepare for the workshop.

Come hear stories from students attending various colleges and universities across the nation (including some from NJCU) about what professors can do to motivate and engage students. During this session, we’ll cover a lot of ground – from the first day of class activities to the power of relationships, and teaching strategies and learning tasks.

Saturday Morning Poetry with Professor Ann Wallace will hold an Open Mic Poetry Reading of nature-inspired work during the Native Plant Society of NJ Hudson County Holiday Party.

Come for an evening of poetry and learn about the important work of the Native Plant Society to restore our local environment and create habitats and food sources for birds and pollinators.

Saturday Morning Poetry is a series hosted by NJCU English professor Ann Wallace and co-produced with Jersey City resident Kim Correro on Instagram @npsnjhudsoncounty for the Hudson County Chapter of the Native Plant Society. Dr. Phyllis Bivins-Hudson '79 is a NJCU alumn (B.A. in Elementary Education). Dr. Bivins-Hudson has been an advocate for underprivileged and under-served students since she began her journey in education. She will give a talk on her latest book released in October 2020, Flying on Broken Wings. This memoir has a strong focus on how education saved her from a world of despair. The memoir also has an accompanying Teacher's Guide and is currently being taught in high schools.

The Division of Professional Education and Lifelong Learning (PELL) at New Jersey City University relaunches the Real Estate Sales Person’s License Course.

This New Jersey-approved 75-hour pre-licensure program prepares qualified individuals to pass the license examination needed to become a Real Estate Sales Agent. Real Estate Agents help people buy property, sell property, or rent property. Among their duties, Real Estate Agents will study property listings, interview prospective clients, accompany clients to property sites, discuss conditions of sale, and draw up real estate contracts.

Program participants must be 18 years of age and older and have a high school or GED diploma.

Successful completers will receive a Certificate of Completion from New Jersey City University.

The Embankment on My Mind exhibits original art inspired by a grassroots preservation initiative that holds the promise of transforming Jersey City's treatment of open space and an emerging trail system. Sixteen botanical artists depicting local flora join 28 artists with wide-ranging responses to the site, a massive stone rail embankment in the Downtown.

COVID-19 vaccines can save you from COVID-19. Get vaccinated as soon as you can.

CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most crucial step in protecting against flu viruses. It still recommends that international travelers stay up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines and follow the latest face mask recommendations. CDC guidelines also advise getting tested before traveling, as well as after arrival. Please check our campus vaccination and testing campaigns. GET VACCINATED!!

2. Wear A Mask
Wear a mask indoors if you are not fully vaccinated or have a weakened immune system. If you are fully vaccinated, wear a mask indoors in areas with substantial or high COVID-19 transmission.

3. Wash Your Hands
Use soap and clean running water for 20 seconds at critical times, such as after using the restroom or before eating.

4. Find Safer Ways to Celebrate the Holidays
There are many ways to enjoy holiday traditions and protect your health.

Those experiencing a mental health crisis or those worried about someone who may need crisis support can call this number.

Veterans can press “1” after dialing 988 to connect directly to the Veterans Crisis Lifeline which serves our nation’s Veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and those who support them. For texts, Veterans should continue to text the Veterans Crisis Lifeline short code: 838255.

In honor of Human Rights Month, we will have a talk by Stephanie Mills—the Director of Programs for Hudson Pride Center.

She will talk about the importance of human rights to the LGBTQI+ community, and how her work and activism intersect her experiences as a person of African descent and member of the LGBTQI+ community.

This bi-weekly drop-in group aims to create a safe space where currently enrolled students can identify potential stressors and set goals for the upcoming week, engage in conversations around wellness and connect with other students by giving and receiving support and feedback.

The NJCU Holiday Choral Concert will take place on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 3 p.m. in the Margaret Williams Theatre on the NJCU campus. The concert will feature performances by the NJCU Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers, both under the direction of Dr. Robert Prowse. The songs will span five centuries and will include songs from Christian and Jewish traditions, plus popular music for the holiday season.

The woodwind chamber ensemble concert features all the woodwind chamber ensembles and soloists at NJCU this fall.

The Pop/R’n’B Ensemble is the creation of the NJCU Music Business program. It is dedicated to performing classic “pop” with a focus on rhythm & blues music from the pens of 20th century tunesmiths whose work ruled the airwaves from the 1960s to the present day.

Dr. Philip Kreniske earned his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from CUNY in 2016 and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Kreniske concentrates on the impact of socioeconomic factors and digital technology on adolescent and young adult development in the U.S. and sub-Saharan Africa. He will discuss his research with vulnerable populations across the globe. In this insightful talk, Dr. Kreniske will discuss his recent publication, entitled “HIV and Suicide Risk Across Adolescence and Young Adulthood: An Examination of Socio‐Demographic, Contextual and Psychosocial Risk Factors for Attempted Suicide in a Longitudinal Cohort of Ageing Adolescents Affected by HIV Living in the New York City Area.”

Nadia Abdallah, a current doctoral student in Educational Technology Leadership at NJCU in Cohort 10, was a featured speaker at the 2022 Nordic Network Educators Conference in Hellerup, Denmark on November 12. Nadia’s talk focused on student agency, differentiation, and using educational technology to give learners a voice in the classroom. Nadia’s work in education draws on her experiences growing up in a home with immigrant Palestinian parents in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a teacher and school leader in international schools in the Middle East for over a decade. Nadia is currently Chief Education and Development Officer at INJAZ Al-Arab in Jordan, which is part of the Junior Achievement Worldwide global network. Her work is focused on developing innovative educational initiatives and business development opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa. Nadia expects to complete her doctoral studies at NJCU in May, 2024.

Three members of the NJCU women's volleyball team were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Women's Volleyball team. Senior right-side hitter Paola Toledo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Colegio Catolico San Rafael), junior setter Sydney Lore (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and sophomore middle blocker Dayshia Espinosa (El Paso, Texas/Pebble Hills) each earned recognition. To be eligible, student-athletes must have a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's action. | Read more

The NJCU Mock Trial Team, coached by Esther Nir, Ph.D., J.D., Director of the NJCU Honors Program, competed in a pair of full weekend invitational tournaments this month. The weekend of November 12-13, they competed at the Scarlet Knight Invitational, along with 19 other teams. The weekend of November 19-20, they competed at the Pirate Invitational with 18 other teams. Between the two tournaments, NJCU faced off against Princeton, Seton Hall, Franklin and Marshall, Rider, Iona, and University of Maryland-Baltimore. The team earned several wins and ties in varying rounds of a highly competitive field with member of the team earning several first and second place rankings in multiple rounds.

Cesar Romero, received an Outstanding Attorney Award for the Pirate Invitational Tournament, with 19 out of 20 ranks on the judges' ballots.

Douglas J. Koch, Ed.D. '20 (Educational Technology, Cohort 5) earned the 2022 Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Employee Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award.

Dr. Koch is the Associate Director of Teaching and Learning at the Medical Educational Center of Excellence at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
