Woodinville High School | Care - Respect - Leadership
"You matter, you belong, and you are enough - just as you are." ~Scilla Andreen
Dear Falcon Families:
We hope this message finds all of you well, and that your student has been re-engaging with their coursework, teachers, and fellow classmates.  We truly miss seeing our students and families here on campus! We understand from messages received and feedback from our teachers and staff that our kids are being creative, innovative, and are making an effort to learn and take advantage of the opportunities being presented during this period of distance learning.  Although this is not what we anticipated when we started the 2019-20 school year, we are proud of our students’ GRIT during this unprecedented time, not only in our Nation’s, but in our world’s history.  Please know we are here to help.

There is no doubt our kids are looking to the adults in their lives for guidance, love, and security. Our actions and behaviors will speak volumes with respect to what they will remember about this period in their young lives. The real challenge now is what we as adults are doing as role models.  What are our kids seeing us do and hearing us say as we deal with this situation? Do we want them to remember the hoarding of toilet paper, or the compassionate and caring actions of the adults in their lives and community? Well, truthfully, we don’t believe any of us will soon forget the toilet paper hoarding and the resulting memes, but we do hope all of us take some time to reflect upon what memories we are making for our kids during this situation through our attitude, behavior, and actions.

As we work through this distance learning model together, please remember if you have questions or concerns to communicate with your student’s teacher. They are ready and willing to work with you and your student! The greatest message we’ve received this past week, over and over again, has been how pleased and excited our teachers and staff are to be working with their students again. Our continued partnership to best support your student’s connection with school and their learning is truly vital to all of us here at Woodinville.

Finally, we hope this edition of E-News from the Principal provides you not only with resources and information, but, most importantly, the knowledge that even through this health crisis we are here and we are, “One Falcon, One Family”.
GO Falcons!

NSD 2020-21 School Year Calendar

NSD worked collaboratively with NSEA on a 2020-21 school year calendar, considering the needs of families and staff. On April 2nd, elementary conference dates were finalized resulting in an approved calendar.  As Dr. Reid shared in her April 2nd Thursday Thoughts, "Barring any unusual circumstances, this is the calendar for the 2020-21 school year".

Distance Learning Attendance

Student attendance is taken every class period during Distance Learning.
  • It is the responsibility of each individual student to complete the appropriate Google Attendance Form* each period on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
  • Students have from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after each class period, outlined in the daily instructional schedule, to complete their daily Google Attendance Form or they will be marked absent.
  • This is the only way that attendance is being recorded for each period.
  • Students will be prompted to log into their NSD @apps.nsd.org account to access the Google Attendance Forms.
  • Students who can't attend or login during the attendance windows should reach out and connect directly with their teacher.

COLLEGE BOARD SAT CORONAVIRUS UPDATES:
SAT EXAMS & COLLEGE ADMISSIONS

SAT EXAMS

March 30, David Coleman, CEO of The College Board provided a Coronavirus update with respect to SAT administrations and college admissions:

“We know that students are anxious about how the coronavirus crisis will affect the college application process, including taking the SAT. We're committed to being flexible and innovative to give all students opportunities to test as soon as the situation allows. We'll share more details as soon as possible, but today we can tell you the following:
  • Currently, the next SAT is scheduled for the first weekend of June. We'll make a decision about whether we can safely hold that administration as soon as it is feasible, given the evolving public health situation.
  • We'll add U.S. and international test administrations in response to canceled administrations. We'll be flexible in making the SAT available in school and out of school as soon as the public health situation allows. We're looking at a range of creative solutions to address increased demand and are in direct conversations with states and districts about School Day administrations. Throughout, we'll continue to place a special focus on students with fee waivers and those with accommodations.
  • Students can stay sharp and get personalized practice support online for free with Khan Academy.
  • If, unfortunately, schools cannot reopen this fall, we're pursuing innovative means to ensure all students can still take the SAT this fall. We'll provide updates about those plans if they become necessary.”
COLLEGE ADMISSIONS
“We're working closely with our members in higher education to minimize the disruption of SAT administration cancellations this spring and to encourage flexibility in the college admissions process whenever possible. We're heartened by those institutions that have already made clear, calming statements that emphasize flexibility in admissions at this time—encouraging students to submit as much information as they can, and reassuring applicants that they will not be disadvantaged should they have to submit Pass/Fail grades for the spring, have incomplete extracurricular profiles, or miss a testing deadline.”
Third Quarter Grading
Per Dr. Reid’s March 25 Message to Families, we will not be providing our customary third quarter progress reports this year. Read Dr. Reid’s entire message to families.

Women’s Basketball Team finishes 2nd in State!
Congratulations to our Lady Falcons Basketball student-athletes who finished 2nd in State with a record of 28-1 this season, along with Head Coach Scott Bullock, Assistant Coach Sam Moscatel, Assistant/JV Coach Ali Forde, and Assistant/C-Team Coach Ryan Wilkerson!

Down by 11 at the start of the 4th on Saturday, March 7 at the Tacoma Dome, the team rallied and came to within 2 points (57-55) with 8 seconds on the clock. However, #3 Central Valley got a big rebound to make it a 2-possession game with 4.6 seconds left, ultimately winning a heartbreaker with a score of 59-55 over the Falcons. Earlier that week, at the March 5 Quarterfinals, the team won 57 – 50 over #2 Todd Beamer and then at the March 6 Semifinals the Falcons won 63-41 over #6 Glacier Peak.

Junior Mia Hughes said, “I think the whole reason this team has been successful this year is we have heart; we don’t give up.” That is very true…what an amazing run it was for an incredibly talented group of dedicated student-athletes! Thanks goes out to Cheer, Band, and all the Falcon Fans who supported the team this season!

Two Lady Falcons Basketball Players named to All-Tournament Team
From "The Woodinville Weekly", March 12, 2020, Written by Bob Kirkpatrick
Junior Mia Hughes and sophomore Tatum Thompson were selected to the Washington 4A Girls State All-Tournament Team. Hughes was named to the First Team and also received MVP status. “Mia averaged 28 points and 11 rebounds over the course of three games — and doing it with exceptional shooting percentages. She definitely took her game to another level,” Coach Scott Bullock said. “It’s so enjoyable as a coach to sit back and watch her play. She also played the full 32 minutes each day without taking any kind of rest”. Thompson was named Second Team All-State. “Tatum really stepped up big for us in Game 2 with 17 points and 5 assists,” Bullock said. “The sky is the limit for this girl in the next two years. Her natural athleticism is off the charts. I can’t wait to see where she takes her game next year.”

1) Pictures of senior students at school, at home, with friends, with family, on vacations, doing something you love, a selfie, really anything! They can be from the beginning of the year to now taking part in the online learning right now.

2) Due to our being out of school and unable to get pictures for a few of the school things yearbook had planned, a new idea was developed. Yearbook would LOVE to get baby/toddler/little kid pictures of senior students for one of the pages. (Please no naked baby pictures!)

We appreciate your support!

Please send to Yearbook Adviser Sharon Alder at salder@nsd.org.
