Rosh Hashanah
At the core, Rosh Hashanah is about cleaning up your life so you can start the New Year with a fresh slate. This mostly means thinking about the past twelve months and taking responsibility for where you didn’t (and of course did) show up for yourself and those you love. Think of Rosh Hashanah as being about the trifecta of forgiveness: apologizing, forgiving, and receiving forgiveness. Making amends with loved ones and forgiving yourself can be the most powerful part of the holiday.

Traditions
As the time for the High Holidays approach, we tend to turn our thoughts to be more reflective and our stomachs to the festive meals. Different families have their own traditions to celebrate. Whether it is for the consistent ritual of the services or the music or the food or the people, we have different ways to mark the passing of the new year.
Whether passed down through the generations or modified to work with contemporary society, not everybody has the same traditions. It is interesting to realize that there is also a geographic component to how we celebrate. Here are some from around the world:
|
- Iraq: Slaughtering a Ram and Holding a Special Seder
- Syria: Blessing the Barber
- Western Europe: Paying Debts
- Eastern Europe: Purchasing a New Knife
- Iran: Psalms in the Home of the Deceased
- Ethiopia: Wear White and Begin Prayers at Dawn
- India: Fast, then Break with Rice Pudding
- Turkey: Avoid Honey
- Morocco: Enjoying Seven Cooked Vegetables
- Turkey: Eating Passover Matzah
- Yemen: Blowing Shofar Early
- Lithuania: Eat teiglach

ROSH HASHANAH-NA
Sung to the tune of “Deck the Halls”
Lyrics by Clay Brown
|
Happy New Year, in September:
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na
Mom says come, or it will end her.
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na
Dip the apples in the honey,
Rosh Hashanah-nana na na na
Uncle David’s jokes aren’t funny...
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na!
Shanah Tovah / Happy New Year!
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na
Took off work so I could be here...
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na
|
| Toss our sins into the water,
Rosh Hashanah-nana na na na
Patiently forgive your daughter.
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na!
Got here late, but it’s still going...
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na
Favorite part’s the Shofar blowing.
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na
Hebrew’s tough, what is that letter?
Rosh Hashanah-nana na na na
Surely, next year I'll do better...
Rosh Hashanah-na nana na na!

A Prayer for Peace in Israel |

When Our Israeli Brothers and Sisters Are Under Attack: A Prayer (excerpted)
by Rabbi Noam E. Marans – American Jewish Committee, Director of Interreligious and Intergroup Relations
When the indiscriminate rockets of hate are launched, our Israeli brothers and sisters are not alone. All Jews are responsible one for the other. Their life and spirit are ours. We are with them.
When the story of the Jewish people in its ancestral homeland is denied and the presence of a Jewish state in the Land of Israel is rejected, it is our story which is under assault. We are with them.
|
| |
|
When Israel, which has never known a day without external threats, sustains yet another moment of heightened assault, we are reminded of the Jewish state’s challenging existential reality. We are with them.
When our Israeli siblings are racing to safe rooms and shelters, our hearts stop with theirs. We are in the ends of the West, but our hearts are in the East. We pray for their safety. We are with them.
When Israel demonstrates time and again its passion for peace and successfully advances peace with multiple neighbors, the value and possibility of shalom are affirmed. We are with them.
Dear God, we pray with our Israeli brothers and sisters, “Spread over us Your shelter of peace . . . Shield us from enemies . . . sword and sorrow. Remove the evil forces that surround us, shelter us in the shadow of Your wings.”
“You, O God, guard us and deliver us . . . Guard our coming and going, grant us life and peace, now and always . . . eternal guardian of Your people Israel.”
