Ruby Rich ’24 Pursues Fulbright ETA in AustriaRuby Rich ’24 is pursuing an English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) for Fulbright Austria. Rich works as a teaching assistant 13 hours a week at two secondary schools in Austria, working with students 10 to 18 years old. The program provides funding for Americans to teach English and act as cultural ambassadors in Austria for one to two years.

For students with Chinese heritage who grew up in the diaspora, Mandarin is more than just a mother tongue—it’s a link to a culture and history they’ve never fully experienced. Quicktakes• On December 5, Vice Chancellor Jeff Lehman hosted a conversation with Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, an influential international social justice philanthropy. The two discussed Walker’s career experiences, from working in international law and finance to his transition into the nonprofit sector with leadership positions at Harlem’s largest community development organization, the Rockefeller Foundation, and his current role at the Ford Foundation.
• On November 23, Adam Brandenburger—Director of the Program on Creativity + Innovation (PCI), Area Head of Economics, Global Network Professor at NYU Shanghai, Director of the Stern-Shanghai MS Programs, J.P. Valles Professor at NYU Stern, and Distinguished Professor at NYU Tandon—was honored with the 2024 Shanghai Magnolia Silver Award for his contributions to the city’s development. He is the seventh member of the NYU Shanghai community to receive this prestigious recognition.
• On December 3, the NYU Shanghai community had a special opportunity to hear from NYU Stern Professor Emeritus of Finance Robert Engle, 2003 Nobel laureate in Economics and co-director of VINS, and Marianne Engle, a world-renowned clinical psychologist and sports psychologist who serves on the faculty of NYU Langone Medical School. An audience of over 120 people raised various questions on topics including the state of the Chinese and US economies, Sino-American people-to-people exchanges, and financial industry career advice. VINS Executive Director Zhou Xin moderated the discussion.
• On November 24, the Mathematics of Machine Learning workshop featured nine talks on topics such as the theory of deep learning, reinforcement learning, optimization, and statistics. The workshop brought together over 50 participants, including PhD students, research associates, and undergraduates, fostering vibrant discussions on recent advancements in machine learning theory, algorithms, and applications. Distinguished speakers from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, East China Normal University, CUHK-Shenzhen, and Duke Kunshan University shared their expertise, offering valuable insights into this rapidly evolving field. The event was supported by the Shanghai Frontier Science Center of AI and Deep Learning.
• Congratulations to N.E.T. Program PhD student Wang Ruinan, Transportation Systems PhD student Liang Qingnan, and research assistant Shi Zhengyu for winning first prize in the 2024 X-GAME Shanghai Smart New Energy Vehicle Big Data Competition! Guided by Assistant Professor of Engineering Chen Zhibin, the team conducted innovative research on electric vehicle charging behavior simulation and proposed a solution titled “Analysis of Heterogeneous Charging Behavior and Facility Matching Driven by Simulation.” Their solution stood out among more than 600 teams from China, earning the top rank in the competition.
• Art is a medium to connect, learn, and grow together as a community. This semester, Associate Arts Professor of Visual Arts Monika Lin has been training volunteers to facilitate printmaking workshops with people who do not typically have access to art-making venues. The volunteers, including Tang Jiapeng ’25, Wen Huiwei ’25, and Visual Arts Studio Coordinator Chen Baichao, facilitated a workshop for NYU Shanghai campus staff members, including security guards, cleaning staff, and cafeteria workers who are part of CEL’s English language skills program (led by CEL Coordinator Susan Dai, Zhu Ziyi ’25, and Xu Ziyun ’25). Another workshop will be held this month.

Cambridge University Deputy Vice Chancellor Hans van de Ven is a professor of Modern Chinese History in the Department of East Asian Studies, a fellow of the British Academy, and a visiting chair professor in the Department of History at Peking University.
