March has kicked off with a bang in the Learning and Teaching Commons! We are busily sifting through Summer Institute proposals, sending them out to our esteemed Commons Advisory Council for review, and anticipating the formation of an exciting schedule of offerings by and for our Evergreen faculty and staff. If you didn’t make the February 28th deadline – good news – we have extended it to Monday, March 6th! So there’s still time to put your great ideas forward by submitting a proposal.
In a recent report from The Chronicle of Higher Education, “Connecting in the Classroom and Beyond,” Beckie Supiano and Karin Fischer provide an overview of the persistent challenge of re-engaging students in the classroom post-COVID along with strategies and high impact practices shared by faculty who contributed to the report. The Washington Center is pleased to invite Evergreen faculty to join a Collaborative workshop on March 7 from 10 - 11:15 a.m. on this critical topic based on social belonging research and three easy to implement strategies. Strategies that Build Community: Social Belonging is Key will be facilitated by Cynthia Alby (Georgia College and State University), Karynne Kleine (Georgia College and State University), Caralyn Zehnder (University of Massachusetts Amherst) and Washington Center Director JuliA Metzker. Register today!
And finally, I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the Inclusive and Culturally Sustaining Teaching Asset Inventory survey at the February 15th faculty meeting or through the follow up email. We appreciate the work of our Commons Faculty Scholar John Caraher on this initiative and are eager to see what insights will be gleaned and how we can incorporate what we learn into the services and resources we provide through the Commons.
