Share a Tree Story with the PSU Canopy Story Project

Share stories about the trees you love! The Canopy Story Project is seeking stories about trees in the Portland Metro Area, in order to understand and share the value of trees to citizens in the region. Visit CanopyStory.org before October 15th, select a tree, and tell us about it! There you may also read tree stories that others have shared with us. This project is a collaboration between PSU Institute for Sustainable Solutions students and faculty, and the US Forestry Service. Join us in learning more about Portland's canopy!

Register for Oregon Pest Detector Training

Oregon Forest Pest Detectors help with the early detection of exotic forest pests. They are part of the front line of defense against these insects, helping to keep them from becoming established. This free training is great for anyone who works or volunteers in urban or natural forests on a regular basis. You will learn how to identify the pests, their host trees, and their signs and symptoms; and what to do if you find an infested tree. Our next training in Portland will take place on Saturday, October 21st (9am – 12:30pm), at the Water Pollution Control Lab near Cathedral Park. ISA, LCB, NALP, and ODA pesticide applicator continuing education credits are available. Visit our website to register or learn more.

Catch the Last Three Tree Inventories of 2017!

Our parks have some of the oldest and largest trees in the city, making them a haven for creatures of all types, including tree loving humans! It’s no wonder-  Portland Parks & Recreation has been taking care of many of these trees for more than 100 years. Come see what trees in Portland can really do in this city and join us for the Park Tree Inventories of Ventura (9/9), Wilshire (9/13), and Arbor Lodge (9/16) Parks.
All are welcome; no experience is necessary! Training is provided at each workday. Volunteers will identify, measure, and map every tree in each park.

Join us for Urban Forestry Fall Workshops

Urban Forestry workshops are back! Join our certified arborists, tree experts, and community partners as we bring tree walks, history presentations, and hands-on tree care opportunities to a neighborhood near you.
All skill levels, ages, and abilities are welcome. Fall workshops begin September 16th, check out our Workshop Calendar for details and to register.

News from the Youth Conservation Crew

The Youth Conservation Crew (YCC) program is an eight-week employment opportunity for youth ages 14-18 that more than doubles the number of PP & R staff working in Portland's natural areas each summer. One of the primary goals of the program is to engage youth from underrepresented backgrounds in gaining exposure to pathways leading to environmental careers. Through this program, 6-person crews engage in differnt aspects of environmental stewardship, including habitat restoration, tree maintenance, trail building, and peer education.
The Urban Forestry contingent of YCC, The Tree Crew (pictured above), has been weeding, mulching, and pruning trees at public schools, city parks, and in rights of way. This year, they also contributed to the Park Tree Inventory and the Heritage Tree Program. Learn more about the accomplishments of these remarkable youth here

Welcome New Urban Forestry Staff

Alec Amacher joins Urban Forestry as a Temporary Tree Inspector. Alec has a life-long interest in trees fostered by growing up in the coastal mountains of Oregon. He began working with trees and chainsaws in high school as part of a mountain bike trail building internship. He then moved onto working with Starker Forests (Corvallis) as a tree trimmer for their forest roads. In 2008, Alec began his arboricultural career working for J.B. Good Inc. (Corvallis) as an apprentice climber. In 2009, he graduated from the Oregon State College of Forestry with a Bachelors of Science in Forest Management and also earned his ISA Arborist Certification. He climbed for Luken’s Tree Preservation (Olympia, WA), Oregon Tree Care and General Tree Service (Portland), before starting his own company in 2014. North Ridge Tree Preservation LLC was the synthesis of his arboricultural experience and allowed him to contract climb and network with arborists across the PNW.
Alec is excited to continue his arboricultural career working for the City of Portland. He sees Portland as a great place to raise his family and is excited to explore all that it has to offer. In his spare time he enjoys hiking, biking, climbing, relaxing and adventuring with his wife Megan, son Elijah and loyal hound Ragnar.
Casey Clapp joins Urban Forestry as a Temporary Tree Inspector. He has been working as a professional arborist for the last six years. After receiving his Master of Science in Environmental Conservation with a focus in Forest Resources and Arboriculture (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) and a Bachelor of Science in Forest Management with a focus on Urban Forestry (Oregon State University), Casey had worked as a arborist consultant in Seattle and Portland since 2014. Casey is an ISA Certified Arborist and Qualified Tree Risk Assessor. Casey will be working alongside his fellow inspectors processing tree permit applications, conducting tree, root, and planting inspections, enforcing Title 11 Code and assisting in emergency call outs. Casey grew up in Milwaukie and returned to Portland after living elsewhere across the US for ten years. He enjoys backpacking and Ultimate Frisbee when he’s not seeking out new forests to explore.
Daphne Cissell and Julie Fukuda join Urban Forestry as Development Services Technicians II (aka “Tree Techs”), and will play pivotal roles in Urban Forestry’s public relations- helping to manage the 823-TREE phone line, responding to customer inquiries, processing tree permit applications and assisting Tree Inspectors in emergency dispatch. They will be located with the Urban Forestry team on the 3rd floor of the BDS building (1900 SW 4th Ave). Learn more about permitting at: www.portlandoregon.gov/trees
Daphne has a Bachelors in Environmental Science from Portland State University and a background in ornamental horticulture. After going to high school in Bellingham, WA, Daphne moved to California to seek the sun, but returned to the PNW in 2006. Daphne has worked at Urban Forestry since 2016 primarily doing data collection for permitting compliance and the Tree Inventory Project
Outside of work she can be found gardening, reading, riding her motorcycle, doing stained glass, and spending time with her partner and two dogs.
Julie Fukuda
Julie is originally from Tokyo, Japan and has lived in Portland, Oregon since 1990. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Portland State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Temple University. Julie is a graduate of the Oregon Department of Forestry/Washington Department of Natural Resources Community Tree Management Institute (2016), and a Neighborhood Tree Steward (2015). Since 2015 Julie worked for Urban Forestry on the Tree Inventory Project. Prior to joining Urban Forestry, Julie's work experience includes retail plant sales, wildlife surveying/monitoring, and environmental consulting project management.
Julie resides in the Sabin neighborhood with her family. In her spare time, Julie can be found hiking among trees in the Pacific Northwest, volunteering with Friends of Trees, cheering on her kids at their soccer games, hiding out in her garden, or sneaking out on plant shopping excursions.
