As we enter October, I want to take a moment to acknowledge that this year has presented us all with a myriad of challenges. Whether in our professional lives or personal journeys, many (maybe all) have faced both uncertainty and change, and this month is certainly no exception. ETIU Updates Will Meet Emerging Needs |

WashU Medicine’s Educational Technology and Innovation Unit (ETIU) is being updated to align with emerging needs in educational technology, instructional design, data strategy, and artificial intelligence.
The updated ETIU, under the leadership of Associate Dean Carolyn Dufault and Director Emily Thompson, will continue to include instructional design services and at-the-elbow educator support through the Instructional Design Studio (IDS), along with technical and system administration support through the Educational Technology Systems and Support (ETSS) team. The Office of Education at WashU Medicine has launched the Community Engagement Hub which advances collaborative and socially engaged interprofessional partnership with the community by providing a centralized hub for students and faculty to coordinate opportunities for community service. The Hub will promote opportunities across the continuum of community engagement including providing services, advocating for others and working in partnership with community. The Community Engagement Hub website includes a repository of St. Louis organizations who are looking for volunteers, specific volunteer events, and resources about community engagement. The Society of Bedside Medicine, in partnership with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Northwestern University Center for Bedside Medicine is now accepting letters of intent for its Bedside Medicine Scholars Program. The one-year scholars program provides a $35,000 stipend (plus an additional $5000 for travel) to support a project at the scholar’s home institution that promotes diagnostic excellence and the reduction of diagnostic error. Letters of intent will be judged by the applicant’s demonstrated interest and commitment to bedside medicine and the quality of the project. PACS Awarded Five-Year Tuition Grant |

The Program in Audiology and Communication Sciences (PACS) has been awarded a five-year professional training grant totaling over $1.2 million from the U.S. Department of Education. This is the fourth grant PACS has received that will provide tuition scholarships for students in the Master of Science in Deaf Education (MSDE) and Doctor of Audiology (AuD) programs. Casey Reimer, PhD, Director of Deaf Education Studies, is the PI of the grant titled, “Project TEACH: Training Educators and Audiologists Working with Young Children with Hearing Loss," highlighting the importance of training teachers of the deaf alongside pediatric audiologists to work with children who are d/hh during the critical years of language development. | More About PACS

The DBBS Co-Curricular and Community Engagement Team recently hosted the 2025 DBBS Student Leadership Retreat. This annual event brings together leaders from all DBBS student groups, as well as student representatives from all DBBS academic programs. The retreat focused on cultivating leadership skills, fostering collaboration, and sharing best practices for impactful event planning. Through interactive sessions, student leaders explored how effective programming strategies align with the core scientific competencies essential for successful PhD completion.

2025 DBBS Student Fellowship Awardees Announced |

Devashish Sen (Molecular Cell Biology, Lab of Dr. David DeNardo) and Lite Yang (Neurosciences, Labs of Drs. Robert Gereau and Vijay Samineni) have been selected as the 2025 DBBS Student Fellowship Awardees. The DBBS Student Fellowship (SF) offers support to trainees who have limited access to external, competitive fellowships that qualify for a standard merit award. DBBS students may apply for this award after completing their thesis proposal. This fellowship is highly competitive and is awarded based on merit of the applicant, the quality of their research proposal, lack of access to external funding, and the tie to the DBBS mission of interdisciplinary research. Cindy Vigueira (top left), PhD, presented a talk entitled, How to Get Faculty and Students to Understand and Effectively use Competencies in Graduate Training. In this talk, Dr. Vigueira laid out how the DBBS Curriculum Committee has developed a new framework for PhD competency-based education similar to the Entrustable Professional Activities framework used in Graduate Medical Education. The Essential Scientific Skills framework is being adopted as the main tool for students’ assessment in DBBS.
Rosie Jones (bottom left), MPPA, presented a talk entitled, Implementing Restorative Practices in the Biomedical Research Community. She discussed the partnership between DBBS and WashU Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to build capacity for restorative practices across the WashU Medicine community.
