The Importance of Community in Your Career
|
Graduate school can be stressful. A strong professional community is fundamental in navigating the complexities of career progression and fostering professional resilience. Understanding how your community can support you and how to cultivate one is important.
|
-
Your community provides a crucial support system for sharing celebrations and struggles. It offers a safe space for receiving constructive and critical feedback on your work, presentations and internship/job searches. This feedback will help you advance your career.
-
Community is a pathway to finding mentors who can help guide your development, offer advice and help navigate career decisions. Furthermore, members of your community can advocate and actively promote your name to future employers.
-
Finding your community can be hard, but joining professional organizations and local chapters can make it easier. Connect with graduate student associations and participate in alumni networking events on campus that align with your interests and chosen field.
