Welcome to Edition 37 of This Week at NJCU for September 19, 2022. This once-weekly Monday publication will inform the university community about all events happening each week over the next eight days on campus and offer important announcements. On Sunday, September 18, Route 440 officially reopened in both directions as emergency construction to fix the century-old sewer lines was completed. The Society Hill southbound entrance will still be closed temporarily and residents are urged to use Kellogg Street entrance. This urgent construction was necessary to fix a road collapse and loss of critical city services. Thank you again for your cooperation.

The Office of Career Services at NJCU's School of Business, in partnership with Saint Peter's University, invites you to participate in our FREE Virtual Career Fair.

The Artist's Way consists of two large-scale projected artworks that draw upon the history of poetic structures to generate rules for parsing and sequencing the 16,000 words to form a new visual poem. By re-positioning the meta-language of artists' statements as the art itself, The Artist’s Way aims to create a space to contemplate the role that systems of language play in our engagement with art.

The exhibition, Extraordinary Still Life, examines the ways in which current artists challenge the traditional genre of still life by representing contemporary subjects or/and using new techniques. Participating artists are Nakeya Brown, Mia Brownell, Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, Takashi Horisaki, Phaan Howng, Ashley Lyon, Margaret Murphy, Lina Puerta, Laurie Riccadonna, and Jeremiah Teipen.

Brown Bag Lunch Art Talk on Still Life: Friday, October 14, 12-1:30 p.m.

Bring your lunch and listen to talks by three artists (Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, Laurie Riccadonna, and Jeremiah Teipen) and art historian (Chris Atkins, Ph.D., Director, Center for Netherlandish Art Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).

*The challenge is to accrue a minimum of 10,000 steps per day most days of the week. The person with the most steps at the end of the contest wins.

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to pursue graduate study in the United Kingdom. Up to 50 scholars are selected each year and may pursue any field of study.

Each year, the US State Department's Gilman Scholarship provides financial support to hundreds of students to study overseas. There are two scholarships available. While the deadline for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship had passed, The Gilman Spring 2023 award application will open in mid-August with an application deadline of Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

This fall, getting your textbooks and course materials is becoming more convenient. NJCU has partnered with Barnes & Noble for a pilot program to provide you with all your course materials by the first day of class so that you have everything you need to be successful in your courses right from the start.

Here’s how it works:

How much does it cost?
The First Day Complete program costs $24 per credit that you are registered for. For example, if you are taking 12 credits, you will be billed $288. Most students see an overall average savings of 35%-50% annually for all course materials.

Having all your course materials by the first day of class puts you at a strong advantage to succeed in your classes. The First Day Complete program will help you be prepared. We encourage you to take full advantage of this program and to go to the First Day Complete webpage to learn more. 

If you have questions about the program that are not answered on our webpage, please email the NJCU Bookstore to discuss the pros and cons of the program for you.

Please know that on July 16, 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline became “988,” replacing the previous 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) number. Today, “988” is the three-digit, nationwide phone number to connect directly to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. By calling or texting 988, you’ll connect with mental health professionals 24/7 that provides confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress. Those experiencing a mental health crisis or those worried about someone who may need crisis support can call this number.

Veterans can press “1” after dialing 988 to connect directly to the Veterans Crisis Lifeline which serves our nation’s Veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and those who support them. For texts, Veterans should continue to text the Veterans Crisis Lifeline short code: 838255.

These centers are supported by local and state sources as well as the Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress.

The Grow with Google Career Readiness Program offers you interactive learning paths that will help you build digital and practical skills needed to thrive in internships or post-college employment. The Career Success Lab at NJCU is excited to offer you this digital tool to excel in your future endeavors. Resume writing, interview techniques, networking tips and how to succeed in a new job, are but a few lessons you can use.

Why Digital Skills Training?
Digital literacy, problem-solving, and creative skills are essential for current and future jobs. Yet, among 18- to 25-year-olds, less than half (44%) believe their education system is preparing them with the skills they need to enter the workforce. We at Grow with Google have a responsibility to ensure that the young people we serve can gain the skills required for the workplace. Then, they can move toward their bright and successful futures knowing they are well-prepared.

The Office of the President and Acting President Jason Kroll will host our second session of Campus Conversations on Monday, September 26 at 2 p.m. in the Gothic Lounge (Hepburn Hall 202).

In addition to the open dialogue that was an essential part of our first Campus Conversations session in August, you will hear important updates from each of our Critical Priority Team leads, detailing their work since the start of the declared 90-day interim budget period.

The Campus Conversations will be open to all faculty, staff, and students, and a virtual option is available.

If you plan to attend, either in-person or virtually, please register below (virtual users should register and then access the second Zoom link).

Additionally, if you would like to submit a question to be answered during the session, please use the link below. Those in attendance (in person and virtually) will be afforded the opportunity to ask questions in real time.

This bi-weekly drop-in group aims to create a safe space where currently enrolled students can identify potential stressors and set goals for the upcoming week, engage in conversations around wellness and connect with other students by giving and receiving support and feedback.

Representatives from VA Healthcare of NJ, the Secaucus Vet Center and Jersey City’s Office of Veterans Affairs will be on campus to answer questions for Veterans & their family members on Wednesday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Office of Military & Veterans Services, GSUB Room 127. All are welcome to visit, sign up for available programs and/or get questions answered.

The 2022 Speaker series "Conversations: Latin America, and Caribbean Issues" presents the talk: Gangs, Organized Crime, and the Immigration Crisis in Latin America by Dr. Jonathan Rosen, an assistant professor of Professional Security Studies at NJCU. This collaborative event is organized by the Latin American Caribbean, and Latino Studies and Professional Security Studies programs at NJCU.

The talk will be simultaneously broadcasted by Zoom.

Join our very own distinguished alumnus, Bob Delaney `85, for a 30-minute presentation on understanding trauma, followed by a discussion on his latest book release: Heroes Are Human: Lessons in Resilience, Courage and Wisdom from the COVID Front Line.

Delaney's message — not all wounds bleed and invisible wounds may hurt as much as the wounds we see — provides a deeper understanding of the toll trauma can take.

The program is ideal for nursing students and professors, healthcare workers, students majoring in criminal justice or counseling fields, or anyone dealing with stress.

Delaney, one of NJCU's most nationally well-known and respected alumni is a former National Basketball Association referee for 25 years and later Vice President of Referee Operations and Director of Officials for the NBA. The former undercover New Jersey state trooper who infiltrated organized crime in the 1970s, is today an author who also serves as an NBA Cares Ambassador and currently the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Special Advisor Officiating Development/Performance.

The NJCU Athletics Hall of Famer was the 2020 NCAA Theodore Roosevelt Award winner — the most prestigious award in college athletics.

Delaney is an internationally respected advocate in the field of post-traumatic stress awareness. He presents worldwide on resiliency, self-care, and post trauma growth. Bob suffered from PTSD as a result of his three years working deep undercover as a New Jersey State Trooper. His three-year infiltration operation in the mid-1970s led to the arrest of major Mafia figures on the East Coast. The story of his life undercover is depicted in his 2008 book Covert: My Years Infiltrating the Mob.

Today, he annually sponsors NJCU's Robert J. Delaney Service Above Self Award — presented annually to an individual or individuals who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in the community, campus, classroom, and sport and whose personal and professional pursuits have served the greater good.

Learn how the game of his youth — basketball — became his therapy. It then opened a door to becoming a top NBA referee for 25 years, all the while consulting with the military, first responders, and public safety personnel all over the world on the subject of Post-Traumatic Stress.

His newest book, Heroes are Human releases September 27, 2022. Members of the audience may receive a complimentary gifted copy of the book as a thank you to our healthcare students and professionals.

The Financial Legacy Conference is co-hosting with Nyamwange Foundation.

Inspirational speaker, TK Coleman will be giving the keynote.
