DOES SOMETHING LOOK DIFFERENT? LET US EXPLAIN ...
We were all Coming Back Safe and Strong during and immediately following the pandemic. We’ll always be Stronger Together.

Now, as our University continues to build on the extraordinary success and momentum we’ve established over the past few years, we’re back and better than ever … with a new look and feel that embraces what it really means to Be Connected here at SBU.

You’ll find it in this newsletter. You’ll read about it in the news we share both inside and outside of campus. You’ll see it on banners, billboards and merchandise with messages like Be Wildly Curious, Be Daring, Be a Difference Maker, Be Connected. You’ll feel it at events and happenings all across campus (sometimes with a Dare to tacked on).

Whether you’re a student, faculty or staff member; a newcomer or long-timer – one thing hasn’t changed. This is all about YOU. So please use these ‘Be Connected’ (f.k.a. Stronger Together) Updates to stay connected to the news you need, the opportunities you want, the accolades you deserve and more. And share YOUR ideas and feedback with us at BeConnected@stonybrook.edu.

Be on the lookout for much more to come on our brand new, SBU brand as we forge our brightest future together. In the meantime, welcome to Fall 2024 semester and happy reading …
BE CONNECTED SPOTLIGHT
A Message from Interim President Richard L. McCormick

As we enter the Fall 2024 semester, I could not be more proud, honored and truly humbled to serve as Stony Brook University’s interim president. As I have expressed before – and will work to prove all year – I am ‘all in’ and plan to be active, engaged and supremely motivated to make Stony Brook even better than it is today. A challenging goal, to be sure, but one I am confident we will meet together.

I continue to be impressed with what I am seeing at Stony Brook, and I am not the only one. As I have immersed myself in learning about the university’s academic, research and clinical care excellence, I recently discovered the details of the Middle States site visit team’s glowing report from its April review as it went through the process of granting us regional accreditation. The reviewers cited how Stony Brook creates a culture of belonging and inclusion, and how we have assembled a strategic plan that has made faculty and staff optimistic about our mission. I join our faculty, staff and students in appreciation and pride for the important work we do here every day.

I enter the new semester with the same level of excitement and anticipation I have experienced as a student, professor, administrator and president in higher education every time I have stepped onto campus this time of year. I am excited to be on this journey with you and anticipate great things ahead. I am thrilled and inspired to join this Seawolf nation and to Be Connected with all of you, in all you do, now and in the future.
The difficult start of the semester, brought on by flash flooding, not only demonstrated our resilient, ‘Seawolf Helping Seawolf’ culture, it showed the power and collaborative force of key areas such as Student Affairs, Facilities, Enrollment Management, and Enterprise Risk Management. These front-line teams worked tirelessly to set things right, communicate critical information and, most importantly, ensure the continuing comfort and safety of our students. Together, we pivoted and prevailed, and I could not be more grateful and proud.

I wish you the very best as we begin this new academic year together. I look forward to seeing you around campus! Thank you for all you do for Stony Brook.
