An Eye-Opening Education
Yige Dong, the Suzanne Wilson Barnett Chair of Contemporary China Studies, believes that the best education comes not only from “reading 10,000 books,” as one of her favorite Chinese sayings states, but also “traveling 10,000 miles.” What’s crucial, she says, is experiencing as many cultures and places as possible. Her academic research and courses center on political economy, gender politics, and China, and she loves sharing those interests with students, seeing their eyes light up in class.

HACKS & CHOPS Julie Nelson Christoph, director of the Center for Writing, Learning, and Teaching, received the Ron Maxwell Distinguished Leadership Award at the National Conference in Peer Tutoring in Writing. The Maxwell Award is given annually to a writing center professional who has contributed with distinction to student development through promoting collaborative learning among peer tutors in writing.

Hero History
The cover of Captain America Comics No. 1 features the star-spangled hero punching Adolf Hitler square in the face—a full nine months before America entered World War II. By tracing the superhero’s evolution through the decades, Erin Budrow ’20 found links between Captain America and our nation’s social history, discovering ways the captain has reflected changing U.S. values and society.
