GRANDPARENTS' DAY
Prep’s Annual Grandparents’ Day is Tuesday, November 24th. Prep grandparents are invited to experience a day in the life of their grandchild by attending classes with them and enjoying a special performance in their honor. There will also be Native dancers in honor of Prep's celebration of Native American Heritage Month. Grandparents and grandchildren are treated to a special lunch in the School Commons on this daya beloved event for all.

Grandparents can expect an invitation in the mail soon. Please encourage them to attend this memorable day, which starts at 9:00 am and ends at 1:30 pm for grandparents. For students, the day ends at the regularly scheduled 3:30 pm dismissal. For more information or to RSVP, contact Karen Burbank at kburbank@sfprep.org or 505.795.7516.

Note: This is a regular school day and all students are required to attend whether or not their grandparents are able to come.

From Good
To Great

Our Sustaining Fund is launched and our 37 Sustaining Fund Parent Ambassadors are hard at work personalizing notes for parents and reaching out to answer any questions. All of the Prep community will be contacted soon to jump in and support our efforts. The Sustaining Fund is named such because it sustains and nurtures our school. It takes the education at Santa Fe Prep from good to great and opens the doors for bright and motivated kids with financial need to have access to this life-changing experience.

We thank Jessica and Nathan Aufrichtig--owners of Pizza Centro and parents of 7th grader Max--for offering a pizza party for the first class to reach 100% parent participation to the Fund!

If you’re a parent, click here to see who the Ambassadors are for your grade and please thank them for their time and dedication when they contact you.
DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE

The NM State Highway Safety Office and the Ford Fund is bringing a great program to Albuquerque on Saturday, November 14th called Driving Skills for Life.  This is a free driving course offered to all teen drivers and those with permits. It reinforces defensive driving skills and gives young drivers the chance to learn from professional drivers.

Teens will drive vehicles on a closed course under the supervision of professional instructors, improving their skills in key areas like hazard recognition, vehicle handling, reaction time and distracted driving. This has been a wonderfully successful program around the country (and the world) and it’s the first time Ford is bringing it to Albuquerque.
There are two sessions offered on Saturday, November 14th. Parents and students must register online. Here is the website: https://drivingskillsforlife.com/
AROUND & ABOUT

The longlist for the National Book Award in Young People’s Literature has been announced, and the Prep library has all the titles for this year’s nominees: Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli; Symphony for the City of the Dead: Dimitri Shostakovich and the Siege of Leningrad by M.T. Anderson; The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin; Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson; Bone Gap by Laura Ruby; X: A Novel by Ilyasah Shabazz with Kela Magoon; Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War by Steve Sheinkin; Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman; and Nimona by Noelle Stevenson.

The Santa Fe Prep Chess Team participated in their first tournament of the year. The event took place at West Las Vegas High School, where schools from all over Northern New Mexico came to compete over the chess board. The Griffins brought 18 students, including seven 7th graders and nine 8th graders. The team included some seasoned veterans, like Harsh Bhundiya '16, who is playing in his last season at Prep as a senior, and a few middle school students who just learned to play weeks before the tournament. In the end, Griffins Chess won over half of the games that they played.

Chess Club meets for informal pickup games during first lunch in room 1 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The Chess Team meets during first lunch on Thursdays and after school on Tuesdays.

Prep will be hosting the next tournament in our own gym on Saturday, December 5th. We are excited to once again fill our campus with bright young chess talent, and we are looking forward to a strong showing from our students.

SFP SENIOR CLASS FUNDRAISER

Hello Santa Fe Prep Community,

My name is Mike Laposata, and I am the President of the 2016 Senior Class. As many of you probably know, each year the Senior class goes on a very fun yet very expensive rafting trip. To help cover the costs, I, along with my Vice-President Jared Lucero, have been tasked with coming up with ideas to help raise money for such a trip.

This year we are very fortunate to be working with Tres Colores, a Prep family-owned restaurant, to start a Tamale Holiday Drive. The Senior class will be selling tamales in person or via this online order form.

  • All of the tamales are made with local ingredients and are organic and GMO free.
  • You can order any variety of Red Chile Pork, Green Chile Chicken, Vegetarian Green Chile, or Chicken Mole.
  • Each tamale is $3, and one third of the proceeds will go to the Senior class.
I can assure you that the tamales are delicious, and the Parents who attended Parent Open House will also be able to attest to this, as Tres Colores catered the event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at mlaposata@sfprep.org

Thank you for supporting the Santa Fe Prep Senior Class!

- Mike Laposata '16
