A flowering plant may provide a safe, biodegradable replacement for DEET as a primary insect repellent.
Researchers at the University of Mississippi’s National Center for Natural Products Research have published a paper in the journal Molecules demonstrating that Stenaria nigricans contains compounds that repel mosquitoes.
The study is the latest development in an ongoing, long-term partnership between the NCNPR and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to screen natural products for a variety of potential uses in the areas of health and agriculture.

UM Partners with Mississippi Cannabis Patients Alliance, Releaf App |
The University of Mississippi has entered into a collaborative agreement with the Mississippi Cannabis Patients Alliance and the Releaf App that will benefit medical marijuana users.
Through the agreement, participating patients can record their experiences with various medical marijuana substances and log the data through the Releaf App. The data will then be available to researchers at the School of Pharmacy’s National Center for Cannabis Research and Education.

Alumni Spotlight: Erika Webster (PharmD 06) |
Clinical pharmacist with Cigna Healthcare in Hattiesburg
Since Pharm.D. graduation: “I completed a PGY-1 residency with Ambulatory Care Emphasis at Regional One in Memphis. I developed a passion for direct patient care, chronic disease management and lifestyle modification education. Since residency, I have worked mainly in the ambulatory care setting. I became a Certified Diabetes Educator in 2009 and a lifestyle coach in 2019. I also obtained an Executive Master of Science in Population Health Management from UMMC in 2020.”
How Ole Miss Pharmacy prepared you: “Ole Miss has excellent professors and practitioners on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. During my third year of pharmacy school, I refined my critical-thinking and problem-solving skills through problem-based learning. My preceptors for my clinical rotations prepared me to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team. They also helped to improve my communication skills through presentations and journal clubs. Several of the faculty members served as mentors who I continue to look up to and reach out to even today.”
Favorite part of what you do: “Serving others. I live by Ephesians 2:10.”
