2022-2023 Housing | Room Swap
Hi there,
We hope your summer continues to go well.
While you have a housing assignment for the upcoming year, we understand that some of you may be looking for a switch in room. If this is your situation, and you would like to change your room assignment for the upcoming academic year, you may want to explore our Room Swap system.
Our Room Swap system is designed to put you in control of your own room change process. You will be able to complete a one-to-one person "swap" between rooms after being connected with other students on campus who are also seeking to change rooms. Ths Room Swap system was open during the summer and the fall, and we are reopening it for a few weeks.
The Room Swap process is open starting today, Friday, July 1 and will remain open until Friday, July 29 at 4 pm (EDT).
Quick reminder while we have you here!
If you have not yet selected a move-in date and time (and aren't currently living on campus this summer), please do so as soon as you are able in your Campus Living eServices Portal. We want you to be able to prepare for your arrival to campus in August and choosing a move-in date and time is an important part of that process.

Now back to Room Swap...
Eligibility Rules for Room Swap
  • A room swap is between two people, mutually agreeing to swap housing assignments. You are requesting to do a one-to-one swap of your assignments
  • The housing assignment of only the students swapping will be impacted, roommate(s) do not have their housing assignment impacted by a room swap.
  • Students may only swap with students of the same gender
  • First-year students may only room swap with other first-year students
  • Second-year students may swap with other second-, third- or fourth-year students living on campus. Second-year students are not allowed to swap with third- or fourth-year students who were assigned to live at 1959 E Street as these two buildings are limited to third- and fourth-years only
  • Third-year students and fourth-year students may swap with other second-, third- or fourth-Year students living on campus. However, third- and fourth-year students who are assigned to live in 1959 E Street are not allowed to swap with a second-year student
Some Student Populations are Excluded from Participating in Room Swap:
  • Students living in Fraternity and Sorority Housing, Williams House, or Casa Cisneros who are seeking a change in their housing assignment should contact their House Manager instead of entering the Room Swap process.
  • Students participating in a Living Learning Community (LLC), such as the Women's Leadership Program, University Honors Program, Politics & Value Program, or Civic House, to name a few. If you desire to swap spaces within your LLC, please contact us via email at living@gwu.edu.
  • Upperclass students living in District House affinity suites. First-year students living in District House affinities are welcome to participate in Room Swap.
  • Students participating in Gender Inclusive Housing. If a mutual swap is desired to or from a room here, we will happily take those requests via email at living@gwu.edu.
How Room Swap Works:
  1. If you are interested in seeking a new assignment for the upcoming academic year, you will need to follow the link below to the Campus Living eServices portal to opt into the Room Swap finder and click on the button, “Want to Switch Rooms? Enter Room Swap”
  2. On the Room Swap Finder (RSF) request form, you will first indicate the RSF Term, which is 2022 Fall/ 2023 Spring.
  3. You will need to indicate the top 3 buildings you are interested in switching to and check the “Opt In” button on that page.
  4. You can type in a description of the room you are booked in if you have any details
  5. Finally, click "Finish."
  6. Once you have completed the form to indicate you are interested in finding a new space, click the "View Room Swap Matches" button and you will be taken to a report that lists all the students and assignments that align with the buildings you are looking to switch into. The report will indicate building and room type, as well as the students’ name, email, and RMSID, who is looking to switch rooms.
  7. As more students opt into Room Swap, the more matches you will find on your Room Swap report. If no student matches your swap criteria, your report will remain blank. We recommend you check the system at least once a day.
  8. You will be able to view your Room Swap report at any time on your e-services portal page by clicking the "View Room Swap Matches" button at the bottom of the page. Every time you run the report, it will show you the most up to date list of students who align with the swap you are trying to make.
  9. Once you identify a student who has a building and room type you would be interested in moving to, you will need to contact them to discuss swapping rooms.
  10. Once you mutually agree with another student to swap rooms, you will add each other’s RMSID and accept each other’s Room Swap request. Both students must successfully accept the request in order for the swap to occur. Students can request and accept Room Swap requests by visiting the blue Room Swap banner at the top of the E-Services page. You are adding in the RMSID of the student you want to SWAP assignments with. DO NOT add in your current roommate's RMSID
  11. After both students accept the swap, our office will manually swap your assignments.
  12. You will be sent your new housing assignment via email once a swap has been completed.

Opt into Room Swap
Please Note the Following about the eServices Portal:
  • As more students opt into Room Swap, the more students will appear on your Room Swap report.
  • If no student matches your swap criteria, your report will remain blank. We recommend you check the system at least once a day.
  • Please make sure to review the eligibility requirements of the Room Swap process.
  • The system will not show you students who you are ineligible to swap with.
  • To avoid overwhelming the system resources, our online portal application system only allows a limited number of students to enter the system at one time.
  • If you log into the system and ‘The system is temporarily full’ text appears on the web portal page, please close both the application and your browser. Once you have done that, reopen your browser, log into the portal to try again.
  • The system will remain open 24-hours-a-day until July 29 at 4:00 PM EDT. After this time, no more Room Swaps may be made.
We encourage you to be patient with the process as it may take some time to identify a peer to swap/exchange rooms and thank you for your cooperation and understanding through this process.
