| Tree Planting Survey, We Want to Hear From You!
| |
| Take Portland's Tree Planting Survey! How can we best provide trees for everyone?
| |
|
Share your opinions about tree planting in this short survey that closes June 30, 2017.
| |
|
We need your voice and feedback to help the City of Portland develop its tree planting strategy to ensure that all residents have access to trees. Currently, tree canopy in Portland is not equitably distributed throughout the city: low income neighborhoods have fewer trees than other neighborhoods.
| |
|
Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry is partnering with community members, stakeholders, and Portland State University to identify the best ways to expand tree canopy access for all residents. Feedback from this short survey will help us understand opportunities and barriers to tree planting in our communities.

The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture is pleased to host the Portland Regional Tree Climbing Competition (TCC). This educational event and skills competition is an excellent way for climbers of all skill levels to learn the latest in safety and climbing techniques. Beginning and experienced climbers are encouraged to participate.
Climbers participate in five events: aerial rescue, belayed speed climb, secured footlock, throw line, and work climb. The top four qualifiers are eligible to compete in the Chapter TCC this fall in Boise, ID. Chapter TCC winners go on to represent PNW-ISA at the International TCC.
This will be a fun filled day that the entire family will enjoy. Please come and watch true tree care professionals at their best!
Regional Tree Climbing Competitions are open to PNW Members and Non-Members alike. PNW-ISA membership is required to compete in the Chapter TCC.

| New Seasonal Staff Are Getting Ready For Summer
| |
| Please join us in welcoming our 2017 seasonal Outreach and Science (O+S) staff. With several new additions for our busy summer season, we’d like to introduce the Community Service Aide IIs, AmeriCorps members, and interns who provide essential programming for Urban Forestry.
| |
| In order of appearance: Kasie Auger, Carrie Black, Van Bogner, Daphne Cissell, Julie Fukuda, Dave Hedberg, Patrick Key, Harrison Layer, Ahmed Omar, Hakima Siyad, Lizzie Sords, Mason Wordell.
| |
|
So just what will these O+S staffers be doing this year? A few highlights include the following:
- Work with communities – teach over 30 workshops, support the Neighborhood Tree Stewards class and projects, and table at events.
- Monitor trees and collect data – inventory 12 parks with volunteers, monitor elms for Dutch elm disease, conduct permit planting compliance checks, provide GIS support.
- Teach youth – lead six youth for 8 weeks in the Youth Conservation Crew, teach students at Learning Landscapes plantings.
- Plant and prune trees – prune 800 young trees with volunteers, give away 450 yard trees at 3 events.
- Support permitting – provide tree technician and storm support and data entry on 5,000+ trees for planting and pruning!

| Local Tree Care Provider List Has Been Updated to Include 3 New Companies
| |
| Urban Forestry held the first Local Tree Care Provider workshop of 2017 on May 19th. Approximately 27 individuals representing 22 tree care companies were in attendance.
| |
|
During the 3-hour workshop, participants learn about trees in non-development and development situations and have the opportunity to ask questions about Portland's Tree Code, Title 11 Trees.
| |
|
Did you know that if you look up Tree Service and/or Arborists in Portland's YellowPages.com, you'll get 250 results?! This can be overwhelming for the general public when trying to find a solution for their tree care needs.
This is one of the reasons that Urban Forestry maintains a list of Local Tree Care Providers and makes the list available to the public as a web page.
With the addition of these 3 new companies: - A Beautiful Tree & Gardens LLC
- Foster Trees
- Roots & Shoots, LLC
there are now 34 companies on the list! Though this may seem like a lot, it is less than 14% of the 250 tree service companies currently listed in the Portland area.
| |
|
In order to be eligible for the list, companies must meet the following requirements: - A Certified Arborist from the company must attend one workshop each year.
- The company must have an active Portland Business License and be in compliance with business license law.
- The company cannot have a documented Tree Code violation within the past year.
- The company must submit complete, accurate, and legible applications.
| |
|
Congratulations to all the tree care companies on the list, and thanks to the participants for showing your dedication to the health of Portland's urban forest!
