National Engineers Week

Take a look at the historic men and women who pioneered the way in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math for future generations! 

Not only is February Black History Month but February 20-26th is also National Engineers Week! Celebrate Black History Month and National Engineers Week with these inspiring figures in STEM!

Yvonne Clark was a pioneer for African-American and women engineers. Clark’s legacy is marked by many first-time achievements. She was the first African American to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering at Howard University in 1951. She was the first woman to receive a Master’s degree in Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1972; and, she was the first female faculty at the College of Engineering at Tennessee State University [TSU], endearing her with the title “TSU’s First Lady of Engineering”. These amazing STEM role models are a part of history in the making as they work to help change the STEM ecosystem to one of diversity and color! Perhaps someone they inspire will be a future history-maker!

Maynard Okereke's passion for science and entertainment, along with his curiosity for new innovation has taken him through an incredible life journey. Noticing a lack of minority involvement in the STEM fields, Maynard Okereke created Hip Hop Science with the goal of encouraging minorities and youth to pursue more advanced career paths. Dr. Daniels provides wonderful resources both to youth and for women (particularly moms) and especially related to the STEM fields.

The first of her two programs is called ‘Pigtails and Pajamas’ and it is a (virtual) youth mentoring program geared at inspiring and assisting black and brown girls (ages 6-12) throughout their academic and personal journeys.

Her second program is called ‘Mommy & Me do STEAM’ which is inspired by her children’s book, Building My Self-eSTEAM in Science.
