 Volume 8   September 2013
Message from the Director
September is always a great time of year for VACCINE with our universities back in Fall term, new students entering our projects, and our Annual Meeting that brings together our faculty, students, and local, state, and federal partners.  We just completed our Annual Meeting last week and had incredible participation from our partners with a day of great dialogue, discussions, and presentations. Mike Young, Federal Security Director, TSA, and Dr. Joe DiRenzo, Chief Operational Analysis, USCG Atlantic Area gave informative and thought provoking invited keynote presentations. We had exciting panels on local and federal security challenges and opportunities, as well as a lively  panel discussing gang intelligence and tools that started a great discussion on deploying technology nationwide with multi-agency information sharing challenges. Our annual meeting is also the best opportunity to understand what VACCINE does during our interactive technology showcase over lunch where most of our projects are being demonstrated and people can “kick the tires” on our products. If you weren’t able to attend our Annual Meeting, we are still happy to have you visit and we can give you a smaller test-drive of our technologies or you can plan to attend the National Strategic Maritime Risk Stakeholders Alliance meeting November 20 and 21 that we are hosting here at Purdue along with our U.S. Coast Guard partners. This meeting will also give you a chance to see what other DHS Centers of Excellence are doing in the maritime risk domain. More information on the event can be found here.

VACCINE 2013 Annual Meeting

Representatives from Motorola speak with one of the students during the VACCINE tech showcase.

On September 26th and 27th members of the VACCINE community gathered at Purdue's Research Park to attend the 2013 Annual Meeting. The event started with a short introduction from Dr. Ebert, the center's director. We were fortunate to have presentations from Mr. Mike Young and Dr. Joe DiRenzo. After their presentations, a number of VACCINE partners, and even a VACCINE PI, Purdue Professor Edward Delp participated in panels discussing federal security and safety challenges, gang and criminal analytics, and public safety challenges. The group had a lively conversation with frequent participation and input from the audience. During the lunch break, participants had an opportunity to mingle and view the tech showcase in the main atrium. Students presented their tools and research and engaged in conversations with PIs, corporate representatives, and end users. The second day of the two day event provided an opportunity for interested parties to undergo training on a number of the tools and technology: GARI, VALET/iVALET, Scatterblog, and Jigsaw were all presented in this hands on training activity.
From left to right, Dr. Joe DiRenzo, Mr. Ed Hertelendy, Mr. Mike Young, and Commander Kevin Hanson served on a panel at the annual meeting.
VACCINE in the News
The VACCINE lab has had a flurry of activity this past month. Not only did we have  a visit from Congresswoman Wolarski, a visit from a member of Governor Pence's office and our annual meeting, but we also had reporters from the major news channels in Indianapolis to report on the VALET tool developed in the VACCINE lab. As we have mentioned before, VALET is a Visual Analtyics Law Enfocement Toolkit designed for aiding first responders and law enforcements by providing a spatial temporal display of event records. There have been a number of articles and pieces on the tool. One of the telecasts from Indianapolis News Channel 6  can be found here
