On Wednesday, NYU Shanghai celebrated a final Thanksgiving at its Century Avenue campus. Friends gathered in the cafeteria to feast on roast turkey, a cornucopia of sides, topped off with pecan pie and apple crumble for dessert. Student band Century Avocado, the Stars of Shanghai student dance club, and the NYU Shanghai Qilin Chinese Music Ensemble provided entertainment.

The Academy-Award nominated documentary Ascension, which screened at NYU Shanghai last Friday, tells a story of contemporary China through scenes of China’s economic growth in the years before the pandemic. The film explores wealth disparity and the drive for productivity in the context of the Chinese Dream.

• Congratulations to NYU Shanghai for winning the " Top Ten Most Popular Virtual Showroom" and the " Excellent Exhibition" awards during the month-long 2022 Shanghai Education Expo. NYU Shanghai was the only school among nearly 100 exhibitors to win two awards. NYU Shanghai’s violet-customized, 720-degree immersive and interactive virtual showroom provided thousands of students, parents, teachers, educational institutions and the general public a window into the university’s exploration and achievements in digital transformation in recent years. The well-designed exhibition included a video introducing mixed-mode teaching within the "Smart Classroom," as well as other examples of digitalization, academic majors, and research achievements.
NYU Shanghai’s Director of University Communications Hua Jiang attended the awards ceremony and delivered a speech entitled "The Road to Digitalization and Innovation at NYU Shanghai."

• As of this month, NYU Shanghai’s 10th Anniversary Fund has raised US$22,928,690, exceeding its goal of US$20 million. All donations will go to helping advance our mission of supporting student scholarship, faculty research, and campus growth! To celebrate, this week student leaders from the 2013 Fund presented donors with 10th-anniversary themed notebooks, cupcakes, and other giveaways. All are welcome to make a gift on behalf of NYU Shanghai’s growth and a scholarship for first-year students!

• On November 22, former World Bank Treasurer and Visiting Professor of Business Jingdong Hua hosted Terry Newman in the third talk in the " Women Leaders in Finance in Development" series. Newman, a veteran business leader and founder of Newman Management Consulting, is a leadership coach who helps technical leaders and teams enhance the human side of leadership. In her talk, Newman advised students on how to think about their own career paths. “Careers are about continual learning,” she said. ”When you have the opportunity, you have to take it. It’s about making connections and being open to making changes.” She emphasized the importance of self-awareness in leadership, and encouraged everyone to reframe “soft skills” as “essential skills.” The final talk in the series will be held on December 8, when Hua will host Lesly Goh, Senior Technical Advisor at the World Bank.

Join us in rooms 1502-1504 on Thursday, December 1 from 7:00–9:00 pm as students in the English for Academic Purposes program at NYU Shanghai give short poster presentations on topics they have been researching in their EAP courses, including social issues in gaming, sustainable food practices, digital identities, animals and human society, money and finance, smart cities, global public health, space exploration, and the wonderful world of academic Disney Studies! Presenters will summarize their research with the help of colorful posters and answer your questions. All members of the NYU Shanghai community are welcome to attend. Student models in up-cycled glam outfits owned the runway at the Trash Fashion Show last Friday. Student environmental club GreenShanghai hosted the event to show that with a little creativity, recycled materials like paper bags, plastics, and metals have the potential to be transformed into the perfect statement pieces. More than 30 NYU alumni and faculty were honored with nominations for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, to be presented on Feb. 5, 2023. Nominations stretched across 24 categories, covering performance, songwriting, producing, and engineering.

TED Talk-style YiXi Talk shared NYU Shanghai Assistant Professor Faculty Fellow of Philosophy Yuan Yuan's presentation on "War Ethics and Soldiers’ Moral Injury." According to Yuan, most frontline soldiers have experienced "moral injury" when killing someone in the war. Yuan’s research found that soldiers’ fear of killing someone even surpassed the fear of being killed. Yuan explained in detail how and why this moral injury is formed in soldiers and the relationship between killing on the battlefield and in everyday life. Some basic principles were given to the general public to evaluate whether a war is fair and whether to support a country going into war.

Large-scale rural-to-urban migration has shaped the socialization contexts of rural adolescents in China and can potentially impact their developmental outcomes. In this study, using data from the first wave of the China Education Panel Study collected in 2013, the speaker will focus on self-efficacy, an important but under-studied facet of non-cognitive development, and assess how it is influenced by family migration status.
