Santa Barbara County Proclaims Local Emergency Due to Holiday Fire
At 1 a.m. on July 7, 2018, Santa Barbara County proclaimed a local emergency due to the Holiday Fire that is currently burning north of the city of Goleta in the unincorporated area of the county, north of Cathedral Oaks west of Fairview Avenue, east to Patterson Avenue. Numerous structures are actively burning, and mandatory evacuations were issued for an area with about 3,200 residents.
The Holiday Fire is causing conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property within the County of Santa Barbara. These conditions are beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment and facilities of the combined forces of Santa Barbara County Operational Area to combat. The proclamation was made by the Director of County Emergency Services; the Board of Supervisors is expected to ratify the proclamation at its next meeting on Tuesday, July 10, 2018.
Proclaiming a local state of emergency is an essential step for local governments dealing with significant incidents. It ensures that all county resources are available for the fire control efforts and supporting activities. Having the proclamation in place also helps facilitate potential State funding and a State Declaration of Emergency, should further evacuations and damage require that declaration.
“Protecting our residents, firefighters, and other first responders is the County's top priority, as well as preventing damage to structures, infrastructure, and our agricultural resources,” said Mona Miyasato, County Executive Officer.
