MAKE IT RAIN Scientists from the Readiness Acceleration & Innovation Network (RAIN) Incubator recently used a machine in Puget Sound’s biology department to help determine the effectiveness of several COVID-19 test kits for the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. The machine, a Bio-RAD CFX96 detection module with a C1000 thermal cycler, allows quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions (qPCR). According to Science Core Facility Technician Amy Replogle, that's a technique that turns a small amount of DNA into a larger amount of DNA and tracks the amount being made with a fluorescent dye so that scientists can detect how much of something—like COVID-19—is present.
