Creature Cognition
Associate Professor of Psychology Erin Colbert-White always wanted to be a veterinarian, but after realizing she was allergic to most animals, she decided to find a different field. A psychology course in high school introduced her to the field of comparative psychology and the idea of understanding the differences between the ways humans and animals think. Now, she studies human-to-animal interactions and communication. We recently caught up with her to discuss her research and her role as director of the newly created Faculty Development Center.

HACKS & CHOPS In the first publication to emerge from a $730,000 National Science Foundation grant, research by biology professors Stacey Weiss and Mark Martin, and recent Logger graduates Helena Heyer-Gray ’21 and Grace Elliott ’20 explores the benefits of bacteria deposited onto eggshells by female lizards during egg-laying, including higher hatch success rates, lower fungal infections, and higher-quality offspring.

SOLSTICE SUN Designed and engineered by physics professors Alan Thorndike (emeritus) and James Evans, the analemma in Harned Hall uses a reflection of the sun’s rays to tell both time of day and day of year—and it’s especially fun to watch on the summer solstice, when, at high noon, a spot of sunlight can be seen crossing the point at which the calendar bar and time bar intersect.
