| About "Ready"
The word comes from the old English, raede, meaning "prepared, ready," and referring often to a horse, as in "ready for riding."
Thanks to the tremendous work of so many across the last three months—including the craftsmen above from McCumber Fine Gardens, who have transformed the upper school quad by working into the evening and on Saturdays for the last few weeks—we're about ready for school to open on Wednesday, August 24. That will be a hard day for many of us, the first time we'll be together as a full school since the loss of Quincy Conway '17 on August 3. It will also be a good day, an important step forward, with renovated classrooms and beautiful outdoor spaces to pursue our collective purpose: to learn and play, to challenge ourselves and each other, to be a better school this year than we were last year.
As a school, we're all about "ready," about being prepared. I look forward to seeing you all soon.
- Jim Leonard, Head of School

Along with twenty-three other secondary school teachers, Leslie Hale attended a three-week workshop at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London this summer. The group, sponsored by the English Speaking Union, had the opportunity to work with Globe education practitioners, voice coaches, movement and historical dance instructors, as well as hobnob with directors and actors involved in productions at the Globe this summer.
The session culminated with the teachers putting on their own version of A Midsummer's Night Dream on the Globe stage as the bells of St. Paul's Cathedral struck midnight. Leslie can't wait to jump into the teaching of Shakespeare with ever more dynamic, interactive classes this year!

This summer, Ms. Rae, Ms. Pendleton, and twelve Upper School students spent two weeks traveling through Mongolia, enjoying its spectacularly beautiful landscapes and the generosity and hospitality of the Mongolian people. The group camped in gers (traditional Mongolian tents) in both the rolling green steppe lands and the more austere plains and hills of the Gobi Desert. They rode horses and camels, climbed sand dunes, went hiking in mountains and swam in rivers, and barreled across the countryside on dirt tracks in 4x4s. They met and played with orphaned Mongolian children, and spent a day with a nomad family working with them and learning about their lives, even milking goats!
The trip closed at the great national Nadaam Festival, where they watched competitions in the “three manly sports”: wrestling, archery, and horse racing. It was an incredible experience from start to finish, and the group would like to thank everyone who helped make it possible.

| New families, please join us Monday, August 22 from 4:00- 5:30pm to jump-start the transition into Santa Fe Prep. Parents will hear from Head of School Jim Leonard, and students will gather with advisors or deans to get those last-minute questions answered, receive academic schedules and planners, find lockers, and make sure they know how to find their classrooms. We hope to see you there!
