The Philadelphia Orchestra is nominated for a Grammy Award for their recording of symphonies by a pair of pioneering Black composers, Florence Price and William L. Dawson. The recording of Dawson’s
Negro Folk Symphony uses a newly edited score meticulously restored by Professor of Music Gwynne Brown. Dawson’s symphony premiered in 1934 to great acclaim, but soon fell into obscurity before being rediscovered in the 21st century.
