Sanford Institute Awards Endowed Professorship in Empathy and Compassion Research to Eric Garland, PhD
We are proud to announce the Sanford Institute has awarded Eric Garland, PhD, as the recipient of our Endowed Professorship in Empathy and Compassion Research. He joins the ranks of esteemed UC San Diego faculty members, Monique Smith, PhD, and Fadel Zeidan, PhD, in this newly appointed role.
Dr. Garland is the developer of an innovative, evidence-based therapy for addiction, emotion dysregulation, and chronic pain founded on insights derived from cognitive and affective neuroscience, namely Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE). He has published more than 250 scientific manuscripts and received more than $80 million in research grants to conduct clinical trials and neuroscientific investigations to examine the efficacy and mechanisms of mindfulness as a treatment for addiction and chronic pain.
He has focused much of his research efforts on generating novel solutions to the opioid epidemic — a severe public health threat which has exacted a tremendous toll on society. More recently, Dr. Garland has begun to work on optimizing MORE with other neuroscience-informed therapeutics like neurofeedback and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.
In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Garland was appointed by former NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins to the NIH HEAL Multi-Disciplinary Working Group to help guide the more than $2 billion HEAL initiative to use science to halt the opioid crisis. In addition, in a bibliometric analysis of mindfulness research published over the past 55 years, Dr. Garland was found to be the most prolific author of mindfulness research in the world. We couldn't be prouder to welcome him to our team and appoint him to this distinguished Institute role.

Sanford Institute Hosts Unique 'Summer CAmP' for Medical Students Across U.S.
This month, the Sanford Institute hosted 'Summer CAmP', but not the kind with mosquitoes and bunk beds! Twelve scholars hailing from CUNY School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, University of South Dakota, and University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio came to UC San Diego via the Compassion Ambassador Program (CAmP) to immerse themselves in empathy and compassion training. The three days of didactics and community-building experiences helped develop each student's skills in understanding and cultivating empathy in medical spaces. Summer CAmP featured presentations from Sanford Institute leadership, including: Lisa Eyler, PhD, Director of the Center for Empathy and Compassion Training in Medical Education, Ramya Rajagopalan, PhD, Associate Director, Training, Evaluation, and Qualitative Research, and Taylor Berninger, MS, Associate Director of Engagement for the Center for Empathy and Technology, and more. Stay tuned to our social media pages (Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook) over the next few weeks for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Summer CAmP from the lens of CAmP Scholar, Ayesha Khan, of CUNY!

Registration is Open for Health Caregivers Communication Workshop on Jan. 6 - 9, 2025
Beyond the demonstrable benefits to patients, research shows that improved interpersonal skills and stronger relationships with patients helps health caregivers as well. In comes the Center for Compassionate Communication's Healthcare Communication workshop on January 6 - 9, 2025, in San Diego, CA. This skills-building workshop is intended for medical educators, physicians, nurses, APPs, and teaching artists, external to UC San Diego. Through a curriculum based in the arts and humanities, attendees will participate in meaningful discussions, innovative exercises, and reflections with fellow health caregivers from across the nation. The purpose: to rewire the way health caregivers think about communication in medicine, and address the importance of their own awareness, self-healing, self-compassion, and wellbeing. The Healthcare Communication Workshop can serve as a standalone learning opportunity or a first step in becoming a trainer/facilitator for your respective institution. It includes interactive follow-up Zoom sessions, online modules with facilitation guides for integration into the classroom, and annual booster workshops. Register today before it's too late!
