Come join Portland's Arbor Day celebration by planting a tree! We will be at East Holladay Park on October 12 for a fun, family-friendly event, so bring your friends and neighbors.
The original Arbor Day was all about planting trees to create forests. PP&R Urban Forestry is working to grow the urban forest in areas in need of trees, on Arbor Day, and every day!

Tree Cover in Portland

Did you know that existing tree canopy coverage in Portland is not equitably distributed throughout the city? Even leaving out all the trees in Forest Park, canopy cover west of the Willamette River is 44%. But east of the Willamette River, where 80% of Portlanders live, canopy cover is only 21%.

We All Need Trees

Not only is canopy cover on the east side less than half of what it is on the west side, low-canopy neighborhoods in east Portland are also home to Portland’s highest percentage of communities of color, immigrant, and refugee communities.

Now and For the Future

The trees in our city provide essential services to those who live here now and for generations to come. Increasing tree canopy coverage, particularly on the east side, can make our city a healthier place to live, and improve the quality of life for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you out there on Arbor Day!

Congratulations to the 2019 Neighborhood Tree Stewards Class!
Neighborhood Tree Stewards focused on planning a park tree planting in 2019. Participants explain their planting plans to the rest of the Neighborhood Tree Steward class.
In 2019, Neighborhood Tree Steward participants worked on planning their own park tree planting, then presented their plans to the rest of the class.
This September, our newest class of Neighborhood Tree Stewards (NTS) were spending their Saturdays learning about Portland’s urban forest and sharing their love of trees.
Participants designed park tree plantings, learned about Portland’s Tree Code - Title 11 Trees, planted new trees at Ventura Park, and canvassed neighbors near East Holladay Park to invite them to the upcoming Arbor Day celebration.
The new Neighborhood Tree Stewards will go on from this program to become advocates for the trees in our city. From street tree pruning to identifying pests and pathogens of trees, our volunteers participate in workshops, stewardship events, and Tree Team projects to support Portland's urban forest.

Thank you to all of our Neighborhood Tree Stewards, and congratulations to the class of 2019!
