Sandra Moon Community Complex Anticipation
The excitement is building as construction is nearing an end on the fourth and final phase of the Sandra Moon Community Complex. The facility is expected to open in August and will provide a home for Arts Huntsville and expanded recreation spaces. Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett provides a sneak peek of the renovated gym areas and new amenities on the way.

Save the Date: D3 Town Hall on Aug. 4
Council Member Jennie Robinson will hold a town hall on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6-7 p.m. in the band room at the Sandra Moon Community Complex. Dennis Madsen, the City’s Manager of Urban & Long-Range Planning, will be the featured speaker to discuss the City's Big Picture master plan.

Celebrating 250 Years on July 4 in Downtown
Huntsville is ready to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday on Saturday, July 4, in downtown Huntsville with a celebration that includes activities for everyone. The events include historical reenactments, a downtown parade, a massive birthday cake, concerts and a dramatic fireworks finale in Big Spring Park. All events are free.

Road Resurfacing in District 3
The City Council recently approved funding for Phase 2 of the City’s road improvement plan for the 2026 fiscal year. The improvements include resurfacing and concrete work for neighborhood roads. Several streets in D3 are part of the projects. Some of those include:
  • Bailey Cove Road from Cecil Ashburn Road to Weatherly Road
  • Four Mile Post Road from Whitesburg Drive to Hickory Hill Lane
  • Briar Hollow Trail from Golden Road to Tea Garden Road

Fun at South Huntsville Main's Summer Hays
Make plans to join South Huntsville Main for South Huntsville’s Summer Hays, a community celebration on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The family-friendly event brings local businesses, families and neighbors together at The Park at Hays Farm, 801 Haysland Rd., and includes a Lego challenge, inflatables and free shaved ice.

Recognizing UAH's Talented Esports Club  
Council Member Robinson recently presented the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Esports Club with a resolution honoring their success during the 2025-26 competitive season. The UAH Esports Club is made up of 27 teams, nine of which qualified for the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) national tournament – demonstrating the program's talent, dedication and teamwork.

City Leaders, Huntsville Schools Collaborate
The City Council and Huntsville City Schools (HCS) held a joint session June 1 to discuss collaboration between the City and the school system as Huntsville’s population continues to grow. Topics discussed at the meeting included the City's annual study on demographics and population growth trends, the  HCS capital plan and a proposed tax increment financing (TIF) district.

Honoring Legacy of Sarah Savage-Jones
Council Member Robinson joined Council Member David Little in presenting a resolution commemorating the retirement of Sarah Savage-Jones from the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and recognizing her profound impact as the Foundation’s President. Throughout her tenure, Savage-Jones led the Foundation to numerous record‑breaking achievements while strengthening community and philanthropic partnerships.

Portion of Tennessee River Greenway Closes 
The Tennessee River Greenway near Ditto Landing is temporarily closed for the construction of a 450-space surface parking lot to accommodate the under-construction Event Center. The City recently approved a contract to build the parking lot. The greenway is expected to re-open by Sept. 1.

Park and Recreation Month Means Fun 
Nationally, July is Park and Recreation Month. In Huntsville, that translates to mean lots of fun. The City’s Parks & Recreation Department will roll out a series of popular family activities sure to make the summer’s highlight reel, culminating with Light Up the Night in Big Spring Park on Friday, July 31.
