Welcome New STS SSO Philip Gilbert
Philip joined the STS Team in August as our new Student Services Officer. Prior to joining Stanford, Philip worked at the Diversity, Initiatives, and Resource Centers at California State University, Fullerton advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion work on campus and developing inclusive and equitable programs for students. Philip is here to help you process your major declaration, clear you for graduation, and answer any questions you may have about the STS major.

Welcome New STS Instructors

Research Scholar, FSI - CISACTrond is a futurist, scholar, podcaster, venture partner, nonresident Fellow at the Atlantic Council, co-founder of Yegii, and Lead Ecosystem evangelist at Tulip. He formerly worked with MIT, WPP, Oracle, and the EU. In addition, he hosts two podcasts, Augmented and Futurized, and is a Forbes columnist. He holds a Ph.D. on the future of work and artificial intelligence. Trond will be teaching STS 156: The Future of Global Systemic Risk in the Winter.

Postdoctoral Scholar, Infectious DiseasesDan Zimmer is a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford Existential Risk Initiative. He holds a BA in the history of science from the New School, an MA in social science from the University of Chicago, and a PhD in political theory from Cornell University. His research draws on these fields to conduct a comparative study of anthropogenic existential risks to human survival (X-risk), taking the perils posed by thermonuclear weapons, cascading ecological collapse, and artificial intelligence as cases. Dan will be teaching STS 158: The Science and Politics of Apocalypse in the Spring.

AutumnSTS 10SI: Introduction to AI Alignment
This 8-week student-initiated course explores the subject of Artificial Intelligence in small discussion-based environments led by student facilitators with targeted readings, weekly group discussions, and an optional project. WinterSTS 156: The Future Of Global Systemic Risk
This course investigates the data, methods, and insights mobilized by key actors such as corporations, governments, and academics to assess systemic risk, create future scenarios, and generate predictions.This year, the course will focus on combined risks from the environmental, health, and emerging tech domains.
SpringSTS 158: The Science and Politics of Apocalypse
This course examines how expectations surrounding the end of the world, and the role that human beings might play in bringing it about, have transformed over the last two centuries. After a brief look at traditional religious apocalypticism, we explore how apocalypse came to be reconsidered as an entirely this-worldly phenomenon that falls within human power to achieve and demands political attention.

Data Science & Machine Learning Infrastructure Research Internship at NASA Ames Research Center
The Universities Space Research Association (USRA) in collaboration with the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Center at NASA’s Ames Research Center (see nas.nasa.gov) is seeking student interns to conduct collaborative research and workforce development projects related to high performance computing.
The objectives of the internships will be to identify, develop, and (where appropriate) demonstrate advanced supercomputing capabilities that would have practical value for enhancing NAS Services in a two- to five-year timeframe. NAS Services include high-end computing, storage, networking, and associated capabilities that enable scientists and engineers supporting NASA missions in space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research.

Acterra is a Bay Area-focused environmental organization based in Palo Alto that brings people together to create local solutions for a healthy planet. ORCA Stanford Startup CompetitionRegistration deadline is October 9, 2022
The ORCA Network, founded by STS alumni, is building a ‘problem-centric’ innovation network to enable anyone to be involved in the innovation process. The competition is a 6-week period for all startups to get traction, build MVPs/protoypes, conduct user research, and finalize their business plans while working closely with the ORCA team. The final event is where the top startups present live to the panel of investors for the $50K investment and where we reveal the top voted start up for the $10K investment.
