Dear UO Dropbox user,
Earlier today (March 26), the University of Oregon instituted a new storage limit of 100 GB per person for the UO Dropbox service.
As of Friday, March 22, our records showed that you were in the 3% of Dropbox users who exceeded the new limit.
Please take action soon to help ensure Dropbox continues working for the entire UO community. If you've already taken action, thank you!
What action is required?
- To ensure you can continue using Dropbox, we're delaying applying the new quota to your account. However, we're asking you to please quickly reduce your Dropbox storage usage below 100 GB.
- If we don't see your storage use decreasing, someone from Information Services may reach out to you directly. We also plan to extend the new quota to your account in the future.
- If you own a Dropbox team folder, please also check your team's Dropbox storage usage and remove files, if necessary. (We can't limit team folder storage quotas administratively.)
Why do I need to reduce my use?
- In short, we're running out of Dropbox storage.
- Dropbox removed the unlimited data offering from the UO license on March 12. Keeping it would have dramatically increased our costs.
- Right now, 82% of the UO Dropbox storage allocation is in use — and we saw significant increases in mid-March. We can maintain the functionality of this commodity service offering only if everyone moderates their usage.
- Exceeding our UO-wide storage limit would prevent all of UO's 19,000 Dropbox users from uploading, changing, and syncing files.
What are my alternatives?
- You have access to a range of alternative storage options:
- We also encourage you to delete any files you no longer need.
- That said, we know people using large amounts of storage may need other options. If you're not sure which option to choose or need help getting started, please contact us!
Where can I get help?
UO IT staff can help you manage your Dropbox storage or switch to a new service.
Thanks in advance for helping ensure Dropbox remains functional for the entire UO community!
