The Bettie J. Koelling Memorial Journalism Scholarship honors Koelling, who served as an administrative assistant in the dean’s office for more than 18 years and struck students, staff and faculty alike with her kind and engaging approach to her work. After her passing in July, her husband of 78 years — former College of Education Associate Dean Charles Koelling — endowed the scholarship with a $50,000 gift.

Pat Forde, BJ ’87, is an award-winning sports journalist and is currently a football analyst for the Big Ten Network. Shelly Rodgers is the second journalism professor in 21 years to be named a Curators’ Distinguished Professor, a prestigious, system-wide honor that recognizes her contributions to research, teaching and mentorship. Her most prominent recent project has been her Gregory Scholars program, in which students at all levels participate in research in the realms of science and health communication, advertising and related social issues.

| Missouri Method in Action
|
AdZou and MOJO Ad, the School of Journalism’s professional advertising agencies, aren’t the only opportunities for strategic communication students to gain experience working for real clients. This past spring, five students in Professor Jon Stemmle’s public relations course put together strategic proposals to help nonprofit Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) promote its work — and BFFP plans to turn those proposals into real action.

Cherisse Halsall, a master’s student from Belize, has been named the 33rd David Kaplan Memorial Fellow. This coming spring, she will work in a full-time, paid position at the ABC News Washington Bureau, where she will rotate through a variety of roles at different productions. In addition, she will receive a $10,000 stipend. It won’t be her first time working at a national news outlet; she previously served briefly as a consultant at CBS News.
