Welcome to the April edition of the SOLVE-CHD monthly updates 2025. This monthly e-newsletter will keep you up to date with the key progress of the SOLVE-CHD projects and provide updates on our events and initiatives. Simply 
email solve-chd.info@sydney.edu.au if you wish to share/add anything from your area that is directly/indirectly related to the SOLVE-CHD program. We would also strongly encourage you to share your research highlights and successes that is relevant to cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention with us so that we can celebrate your achievements with our network. 
A new Australian Clinical Guideline for Diagnosing and Managing Acute Coronary Syndromes 2025 has been released!
This guideline replaces the previous Australian Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Acute Coronary Syndromes 2016. It includes:
  • Recommendations for assessing and managing people with suspected or confirmed AC
  • A summary of the available evidence supporting the recommendation
  • Practical advice on how to apply the recommendation
  • Specific practice points for assessing and managing ACS in underserved populations

Key Updates and Highlights

  • The 3rd Round of EOIs for the ACRA-Funded ICCPR CRFC closed on 31st March 2025 and is now being assessed. Eligible ACRA members will be able to complete the training for free. Click here to find out more. 

  • Bond University's Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare has released their 2024 Annual Report. Read it here.

  • Prof Ben Freedman features in a new media article calling for doctors to screen atrial fibrillation and hypertension together.
SOLVE-CHD Spotlight

Dr Sidney Smith Jr.


Sidney C. Smith, Jr., M.D. is Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina. Dr Smith is a past president of both the American Heart Association (AHA) and World Heart Federation (WHF), and is a Master Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. 
Dr. Smith has authored or co-authored more than 500 published papers and chapters and has served on the editorial boards for the Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation and JAMA Cardiology. He is listed on Thomson Reuters list of Highly Cited Researchers, which recognizes the top 1 percent of researchers in their field and the Clarivate top 1 percent of national and international researchers. Dr. Smith has received numerous awards in recognition of his contributions and has been elected to Best Doctors in America yearly since 1998.
We are delighted to announce that Dr Smith has been invited to serve as the keynote speaker at the CSANZ (Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand) Annual Scientific Meeting in August 2025. With his wealth of hands-on experience and expertise in providing care for patients with heart disease, as well as in developing prevention strategies on both the national and international level, it is sure to be a valuable and inspiring session, so don't miss it!

Hearts4Heart:
Patient Advocacy Training Academy on Research, Clinical Guidelines, Media, and Health Policy


Have you experienced a heart condition? Do you want to learn how to share your story and make a difference? 📖💬

Key Program Areas

The Advocacy Training Academy will engage participants in four key areas to cultivate the necessary skills to effectively share their stories and become Ambassadors for Hearts4heart. 
 
1. Health Policy and Advocacy 
Provides a strong foundation in policy and advocacy, empowering participants to influence change effectively

2. Research and Clinical Guidelines
Equips participants with skills to interpret and understand research and clinical guideline processes to provide meaningful contributions to relevant committees.

3. Media Training and Advocacy Skills 

Trains and prepares participants for public engagements and media opportunities, through robust media and presentation training focusing on confidence-building and storytelling to amplify participants’ voices in the public domain.

4. Capacity Building for Committee Participation  Offers guidance on navigating meeting structures, presenting their perspective and engaging collaboratively with other committee members enabling participants to take on roles within committees, advisory boards and other decision-making bodies.
