In the M. Night Shyamalan movie The Village, a young woman musters up her courage to tell a young man that she loves him. She goes to him and pours out her heart to him declaring, “When you are in love you should shout it from the rooftops . . .” Unfortunately, the young man is in love with her sister instead of her. This brings great pain and terrible sobbing.
The story unmasks our fears. What if we confess our love and it goes unrequited? On this day when we celebrate romantic love, Paul reminds us that we are part of the greatest love story of all. The gospel or good news is that God’s love saves us when we believe in him. It is available to both Jew and Gentile – to all people. “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.” In this good news of God’s love we find the opportunity to be right with God by believing in him.
We sang our love for God on Sunday, “If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.” If you love God, your love for him will not go unrequited. On the other hand, have we responded to God’s love for us. Will we let God’s love go unrequited? If we love God, we should shout it from the rooftop. He showed his love by allowing himself to be nailed to a cross on a hillside. Fall in love with him again today. Return to your first love today. You will not be disappointed.
