Antioch FRC is one-stop shop for students and families
It was an emergency. Ice and snow blanketed the city, closing schools day after day. That was difficult for many families, but a real hardship for families that depend on school meals to provide much-needed nutrition for their children.
When United Way and Second Harvest teamed up to provide free food supplies, PENCIL was delighted to open all six of our Family Resource Centers as distribution sites. This is the first of a series highlighting the services of PENCIL FRCs at Antioch, Glencliff, Maplewood, Madison, Bordeaux and Tusculum schools.
Despite some slippery roads last week, Nicole Hill made her way to the PENCIL Family Resource Center at Antioch High School. As Director of the FRC, Nicole knew her Antioch-area families needed her.
The Antioch FRC was a natural choice for distributing food boxes, Nicole said, because “it’s a one-stop shop for families to receive aid for their needs and/or be referred to agencies that are experts in their area of need. In short, the FRC serves as a liaison between Antioch High School and the community at large.”
Working in partnership with the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and Metro schools, Antioch's FRC provides many services such as basic food and clothing, support groups for girls, character-building courses, teen mom groups, classes for refugees and immigrants, and referrals to Nashville social agencies. Since the Center began year-round operation in May 2013, the FRC has “built a strong rapport and level of trust with students and created a safe and hospitable environment where students and families feel comfortable,” Nicole said.
Clearly, the Antioch FRC has done a great job of fulfilling PENCIL’s mission of linking community resources with Metro public schools to help young people!
Kelly Johnson, an MNPS teacher who volunteered at LP PENCIL Box
MNPS Teacher Gives Back!
PENCIL’s LP PENCIL Box is well-respected throughout Nashville for providing teachers with free school supplies and delivering a rich and satisfying volunteer experience. Kelly Johnson, an MNPS teacher at Hickman Elementary, knows both sides of the coin because she has shopped and volunteered at the Box.
“I’ve always admired PENCIL for putting so much work into supporting teachers all over Metro,” Kelly said. “Volunteering for LP Pencil Box humbled me, seeing so many teachers in need of these supplies and knowing if they were not furnished, the money to buy the supplies would likely have come from teachers' personal funds.”
Kelly is in her sixth year as an exceptional education teacher, and now teaches at Hickman Elementary after four year at Dan Mills Elementary. The free supplies she selected from the Box are going to good use in her classroom.
“These items have been so helpful with all the new reading and math centers,” she said. “It takes more and more material to keep these centers up.”

PENCIL in Action
“Southwest is a strong PENCIL Partner! A crew of Southwest employees painted the entire front foyer and hallway. They did it during the school day. It was important that our kids got to see volunteers in action. They could see that people were working for them.”
-- Denise Colon-Principal, Tulip Grove Elementary School
As a Reading Partner, I get to see the difference my volunteer time makes as I watch my students make great strides in reading. At the beginning of the school year, my kindergartener didn't know the names and sounds of all her letters. After just one semester working with her, she is already able to read some two- and three-letter sight words. It's incredible!
