Colossians 4:6
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
New International Version (NIV)
Words always matter.  The current communication craze reminds us that once spoken, words are irretrievable.  Shouldn’t we choose them carefully?  Paul reminds us in his letter to the Colossians that in Christ we have put off the old and put on the new.  God has given us a new life.  People with new lives think, talk and act differently than before.  Especially is this true in the area of our speech.
Grace not only saves us but it governs our conversation, filling our speech with kindness.  As salt seasons food making it better, so grace transforms our words.  This enables us to answer all who speak to us carefully.  Words can be weapons if used improperly.  With our conversation we can both take and give life.  Life-giving followers of Jesus speak words that build others up, benefiting them according to their needs.
What word will you speak to the person who accuses you or misunderstands you?  How will you sustain the weary person with your words today? Is there any encouragement in your soul?  Be sure to share it with others.  Encouragement is a spiritual gift.  Discouragement is not.
Pray with me:
Father, fill our mouths with worthwhile stuff and stop us when we have said enough.  Let grace flow from our hearts through our mouths into the ears of those who hear us today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
