Jeremiah 38:12-13
Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so, and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
New International Version (NIV)
Have you ever been stuck in the mud?  I remember years ago we went hunting with good friends.  A soft rain began to fall.  Before long we tried to drive out on the dirt road and found ourselves stuck.  A friend tried to pull us out but his wheels also sank in the mire.  We called a tow truck which also sunk in the mud.  Finally a big tow truck came and towed all of us out.  We thanked the driver, glad to be on our way home.

Jeremiah’s opponents threw him into a cistern where he sank in the mud.  Ebed-melech, a Cushite whose name mean servant of the King went and told the king and received permission to rescue Jeremiah.  With the help of his servants he lifted Jeremiah out of the mud.  The lowered ropes came as a kindness to the prophet.  One person who cared changed everything for Jeremiah.

Sooner or later we all find ourselves sinking in some kind of muddy mess.  Who will lift us out?  David told our story in Psalm 40, “I waited patiently for the Lord and he turned to me and heard my cry for help.  He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay and set my feet on a rock.”  Out of the quicksand of sin, our Savior lifts us, cleans us up, and holds us until we get our footing.    Give him thanks!

 Pray with me:
Father, thank you for seeing us in our sin and sending your Son to save us.  Help us to live grateful lives, offering ourselves in service of you, our great King.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
