Late Season Insect Pest Scouting
As we pass the halfway point of this growing season, insect pest scouting should be at the top of folks’ minds. This year’s weather brought many early-season pests to our crops at the start of the growing season. Since then, crop growth has progressed, heat units and growing degree days have started to accumulate (especially in the southern part of the state), and certain insect pests may be starting to make their way to our fields.

4-H Day Camps Wrap up Summer
Fond du Lac County 4-H wrapped up the summer finishing off with four summer day camps in August. Art Camp, Cloverbud Day Camp: Teddy Bear Adventure, Cardboard Camp: Zoology, and LEGO camps were the last of the 4-H Summer Camps. The camps were well attended and the youth all shared things that they learned from attending camp.

What is a Will? Why Is It Important to Have One?
Planning for the end of life may be challenging and very emotional. Thinking about issues like end-of-life health decisions and what should happen to items you own after your death can be complicated. One tool that can help with these issues is a will. A will is a document that gives directions about what to do with your property and who should care for your children, and others you make decisions for, after your death.

Updating our Thinking about Corn Silage & Alternative Forages
Differences in nutrient composition and digestibility among corn hybrids have the potential to impact energy content of corn silage and ultimately influence dairy cow production. From the perspective of maximizing nutritive value, energy predictions of corn silage can be useful to aid producers in selecting hybrids. The MILK index was developed to predict the energy content (milk/ton) and energy yield (milk/acre) of forages.

Benefits of Higher Education
Although the costs of higher education continue to increase, college graduates enjoy lower unemployment rates and higher earnings. People with a bachelor’s degree earned a median of $1,334 per week or about $69,000 per year, significantly more than those with less education. Individuals with advanced degrees tend to earn even more.

The Fond du Lac/Sheboygan FoodWIse program is currently hiring an 80% full-time Nutrition Educator to serve in Fond du Lac County. FoodWIse is a federally funded nutrition education program that aims to advance healthy eating habits, active lifestyles, and healthy community environments for individuals and families with limited incomes through nutrition education at the individual, community, and systems level.
