I am an Acorn . . . Nan Middleton

I am an Acorn because I was a teenager in southeast Michigan during the late 1960s. It wasn’t unusual for the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit (Michigan) to be in the news for its radical stance and active political involvement in human/women’s rights and social justice. The no-nonsense and fearless positions on issues of the time made a strong and lasting impression on my 17-year-old self.
The divisive 2016 political campaigns and then the Presidential election results made me feel isolated and as if I was in a bad-dream-earthquake. I knew what I needed and where to go. For the first time, I walked into a Unitarian Universalist congregation, this one in Appleton, on the first Sunday following the election. I knew I would find folks just as dismayed and horrified as I was, and I did. I also knew I would find solid footing and guidance to navigate through the political turmoil and social unrest that surely would follow, and I did.
I contribute to the annual operating budget; it is important to me to keep our faith community strong and vibrant today. I have established in my will that a portion of my estate goes to the Fellowship’s Endowment Fund because I want the Fellowship to be strong and vibrant for a person of today who needs a community and grounding 47 years in the future.

Sunday Service

10:00 am In Person and Livestream
Roll On, Musical Miles
featuring Christopher Gold
As the Fox Cities prepares to throw its annual four-day musical party (Mile of Music 9), no one’s better equipped to weave the web of the joy of playing live than Christopher Gold, a man who’s brought his original songwriting and folk music chops to every festival since its 2013 debut. Known as much for his humor and storytelling, Gold now has his own weekly radio show, aptly titled, “Backstories,” on 91.1 The Avenue. On this Sunday, Gold will share his thoughts on the magic of the music and help us appreciate why it resonates with so many of us. And he’ll play a few original songs for us, too. We’ll also preview nine of the 130-plus musical artists coming to Appleton so you’re ready to venture out on College Avenue when Mile of Music takes place August 4 through 7 in Downtown Appleton.

Teachers and students in the elementary RE class will need to continue masking and practice social distancing as much as possible.

Our Whole Lives Update- OWLs is on for the fall!

We are thrilled to announce that OWLs 8-9 will be offered this fall! We have been adding names to our class roster throughout the summer, and have room for more. Please contact Kim Hartman by August 26 to confirm that you are interested in enrolling your child. We will be capping the class at 20 participants.

OWLs will be held from 6:30-8:30 PM on the first and third Wednesday evenings of each month starting in September.

Our Whole Lives is a comprehensive sexuality program that helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives not only provides facts about anatomy and human development, but also helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.

More information about the OWLs program can be found at http://www.uua.org/re/owl

Calling all Weekend Landscapers!

Do you have some flexibility in your weekly schedule to do more of what you love doing during the weekends, but need a place to do so?
Our landscaping contractor is going to be placing mulch in areas around the Fellowship building and gardens on  Wednesday, August 3. Many of the areas have deteriorated to the point of not having any mulch present, which is allowing weeds to invade our beautiful space.
If you are available on Wednesday, August 3 and would like to help please contact me at Phyllis@fvuuf.org or 920.731.0849 and let me know if you are available in the morning or afternoon so we can coordinate with our contractor and plan appropriate work parties.
It’s a big job, but many hands make light work and any labor we can provide will help keep the cost to the Fellowship down! Thank you for considering this opportunity.
