The keynote address for this year's Student Research and Creative Activity Showcase was delivered by two alums from the Class of 1986, Michael and Lori Lahn. The theme of their address was about the power of community. I was particularly touched by how they recalled that the community they built during their time at SUNY Oneonta laid a foundation for the rest of their lives. It was here that they learned how important being part of a community is, how they could positively impact their communities, and an awareness of their opportunities to contribute as both local and global citizens.
This edition of Notes from Netzer showcases a few of the many outstanding contributions from members of our university community. This time of year is full of awards ceremonies and recognitions, but I want to thank everyone for your contributions throughout the year. The commitment from individuals to dedicate their time and support activities, causes, programs, and initiatives that positively impact the entire university embodies the cooperative spirit that keeps SUNY Oneonta vibrant and successful.
Sincerely,
Alberto J.F. Cardelle
President

Chilton Reynolds Honored with SUNY FACT2 Award
| |
FACT2 is an advisory body to the SUNY Provost that advocates for and supports technology use and innovation in the vital academic areas of pedagogy, research, and service. Chilton Reynolds, Director of the Faculty Center for Teaching, Learning and Scholarship, has earned a 2024 FACT2 Excellence Award for Administrative Leadership.
FACT2 Excellence Awards are SUNY system‐level honors conferred to acknowledge and recognize consistently noteworthy achievement in the use of technology to support instruction, research, and service, and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence in these areas throughout the SUNY System. The Excellence Award for Administrative Leadership is given annually to only two individuals—one to represent all the state-operated campuses and one to represent all SUNY community colleges.
This prestigious award recognizes Chilton’s leadership on campus and across SUNY and is based on multiple measures of administrative impact. These measures include:
-
fostering communities of learners, learning resources, and learning initiatives, including his development of the Global Commons Project, an online international service-learning experience for all SUNY students during the pandemic, and his leading of an Innovative Assessment task group and community of practice on alternative grading practices at the system and campus levels, respectively
-
supporting professional development to inform and improve curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular experiences through technology for his achievements serving as SUNY Oneonta’s COIL Campus Coordinator and co-leading the Future Ready Fellowship which supported faculty efforts to create classroom learning experiences that students connect to their career readiness
-
enabling staff to collaborate within an institution on shared goals and interests to effectively advance student success through technology, including supporting the Faculty Center staff in the exploration of Open Educational Resources platforms and bringing in over $50,000 in grants to further work in this area, as well as supporting Faculty Center staff applying for an Innovative Instruction Technology Grant to create a SUNY-wide website creation space called SUNY Create which in turn enabled Oneonta faculty to develop a spin-off site, “OpenLab,” for students
-
advancing outcomes and partnerships among SUNY campuses and beyond, for example Chilton’s co-chairing of the Adaptive Learning FACT2 Task Group, a SUNY-wide group that explored different adaptive learning platforms and their uses in various disciplines
-
providing and organizing resources to advance teaching and learning with technology, including not only his support of faculty colleagues seeking to enhance their use of technology in pedagogy and research, but also his establishing of teaching and learning focus areas for the Faculty Center based on AACU’s high-impact practices; facilitating the Talking Teaching series; and creating a Tips for Remote Instruction Playlist—a continuously evolving, curated YouTube playlist of best practices for remote instruction that has benefitted many faculty during and after the pandemic.
