Registering with Student Disability Services

To be eligible to receive accommodations on the Homewood campus, students must first register with SDS. To register, students must submit valid documentation of a disability (or disabilities) that meets the university's published guidelines. The registration process, including submission of documentation, can be completed online through our accommodation management software, AIM. Students are encouraged to meet with an SDS staff member prior to beginning the registration process. To arrange an in-person meeting or telephone conversation, students should contact SDS at 410-516-4720 or studentdisabilityservices@jhu.edu.

College Transit Pass

The MTA All Access College Transit Pass offers students unlimited, convenient, and affordable travel around Baltimore. The pass can be used on the MTA Local Bus, Light Rail, and Metro Subway.

Hopkins Symphony Orchestra

Hopkins Symphony Orchestra is a program of JHU, under the Homewood Arts Programs, and is also the only community orchestra in Baltimore City. Orchestra members are JHU students (undergrad and graduate students not majoring in music), JHU alumni, faculty, staff, and community musicians.
HSO consists of two orchestras, the Symphony Orchestra and the Concert Orchestra, performing no less than eight concerts a year on the Homewood campus, all of which are free to JHU students. Is your Blue Jay interested in joining HSO? Orchestra auditions will be held Aug. 30-Sept. 1 and the online signup period is Aug. 1-27. Encourage your Blue Jay to sign up for an audition! Learn more about auditions.

Homewood Arts Programs Orientation Shows

Homewood Arts Programs has over 50 student groups in dance, music, and theater that present more than 120 major performances on campus each year. If your student is interested in joining a performing arts group, encourage them to attend one or more of the Orientation Shows to see all the groups perform and speak with current members.
Due to Shriver Hall being closed for renovations, seating is limited at each venue, and only first-year and new graduate students can attend.
Saturday, Sept. 1, 7pm: Orientation A Cappella Show (Bloomberg Hall auditorium)
Sunday, Sept. 2, 2pm: Orientation Dance Show (Baltimore Museum of Art auditorium)
Monday, Sept. 3, 7pm: Orientation Theater Show (Arellano Theater)
Welcome Blue Jay Families of the Class of 2022 and welcome back to our returning families! This electronic communication, produced monthly by our office of Parent and Family Relations, acts as an important resource to keep your family informed so that you can better support your student. To view previous editions of this newsletter, as well as the most up to date resources for our parent and family community, please visit the Blue Jay Families website.

Note: This monthly communication is different from the weekly newsletters that are being sent to our 2022 Blue Jay Families this summer to help them prepare for New Student Orientation.

We have a wonderful semester planned. Mark your calendars as Family Weekend is October 5-7, 2018! We are extremely excited about the opportunities being planned for you and your family. Please visit our Family Weekend website to view the complete schedule of events as well as information on parking and hotel accommodations. Please note that some programs during Family Weekend require registration. It is important that you register so that we can properly plan for your family.

There are several opportunities for our Blue Jay Families to engage and volunteer throughout the year. For example, you may consider becoming a Blue Jay Family Ambassador. As an ambassador, you support JHU by volunteering your time to help with campus events and outreach activities in the surrounding area and in your home community. You may also serve as a contact person for other families who have questions about the Blue Jay Family experience. Ambassadors develop strong connections to JHU and relationships with fellow Blue Jay Families. Join one of our Ambassador committees today! Please visit our Blue Jay Family Ambassador page to learn more and sign up.
Additionally, families can join the Hopkins Parents Council, a 60-plus member group which philanthropically supports the university while connecting with university leadership. (See our Parents Programs and Giving article below for more details.)

Volunteering is a great way to develop strong connections to JHU and relationships with fellow Blue Jay Families while supporting your student’s experience. Please visit our Blue Jay Family Ambassador or Hopkins Parents Council pages to learn more and sign up.

Lastly, if you are interested in writing about your college transition with your student, we want to hear from you! This transparency supports other Blue Jay Families in their journey. Please email us at bluejayfamilies@jhu.edu or call 410-516-7355 for more information.

All the best!

Introducing the First-Year Launch Career Program

Welcome, parents and family members! While it may seem early for your student to meet with the Homewood Career Center, we’ve found that getting students started in their first year helps them beat stress and build community and contacts. To that end, we’re offering a new, first-year exclusive program: Launch. Every incoming student is assigned to a Career Coach, together with their First-Year Mentor group, who will be a go-to contact for their first year at JHU.
Our Career Coaches will guide students through key first-year milestones throughout the year, from exploring possible careers to planning their first summer. At the end of the year, they’ll “graduate” into industry-specific Career Academies.

Connect with Parents Programs & Giving

We invite you to consider membership on the Hopkins Parents Council. Members encourage Parents Fund support, serve as university advocates as well as regional hosts for special events, and meet twice yearly on the Homewood campus while engaging with university leadership and faculty.

Parents can also play an important role for all Blue Jays exploring careers by offering summer paid internships through the Parents Internship Network. If your company already has a robust internship program or you’d like to implement one, you can post an opportunity through the JHU Career Center portal, Handshake. We’ll show you how!

Contact us at parents@jhu.edu to learn more about the Hopkins Parents Council, PIN, and other opportunities for parent support and engagement.
