In 1893, Florence Bascom became the first woman awarded a PhD from Johns Hopkins University. After earning her doctorate in geology, she went on to become a pioneer in her field. She was the first woman employed by the United States Geological Survey, founded the geology department at Bryn Mawr College, and published more than 40 articles on genetic petrography, geomorphology, and gravels. A Word from the Counseling Center: The Effects of Alcohol on a College Student's Life

Across the United States, alcohol use by college students is associated with serious academic, health, and safety consequences. In a 2017 survey of JHU students by the Maryland Collaborative to Reduce College Drinking and Related Consequences, 26% of JHU students who used alcohol during the past year reported experiencing academic consequences because of alcohol consumption. Alternative Spring Break Through the Interfaith Center and the Office of Campus Ministries

During the week of Spring Break, the Office of Campus Ministries in Student Affairs offers an annual service trip. This social justice and interfaith program brings the best and brightest of Hopkin’s students into a community entirely different from our own.
This years' trip to Tucson, Arizona will explore the issues of border justice and immigration. Through a generous gift to the Office of Campus Ministries, we are able to offer this trip to students for the cost of $100.

Community Living Hosts Mixer with Campus Safety and Security

A recent mixer in The LaB, a restaurant and student union space within the Homewood Apartments, connected Campus Safety and Security officers with students to chat in a casual setting with tasty food. The idea was to break the ice and encourage students to feel comfortable reaching out to the officers if they ever need help. At the same time, the mixer provided an opportunity for the more than two dozen students who participated to learn about off-campus housing services and ask questions about the neighborhoods near campus.
