New report on Solar Equity in L.A., CalEnviroScreen 2.0, and a May 16th Public Forum on Parks Access

Environmental Justice eBulletin
Dear PERE allies,
In this Environmental Justice eBulletin, you will find:
  • Our new report with UCLA on solar equity in Los Angeles,
  • PERE quoted in L.A. Times about the new "Cal EnviroScreen 2.0" tool, and
  • Event details for an upcoming public forum in L.A. to improve parks access.
We are excited to share our joint USC PERE/UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation report for the Los Angeles Business Council Institute.
This study highlights strategic investments in L.A.'s solar equity "hot spots," or high-need neighborhoods with high solar potential. The report shows how the growth of the feed-in-tarriff (FiT)/CLEAN LA Solar program could spur economic growth, foster environmental sustainability, and create social equity in the region's workforce.

"A significantly expanded commercial rooftop solar program in Los Angeles would create thousands of new jobs and spur hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment, with particular benefit to residents living in traditionally underserved neighborhoods in Los Angeles." - LA Business Council Institute

PERE Media Mention
Last week's article featured the State's new CalEnviroScreen 2.0 tool which now uses Census tract level data to analyze and rank neighborhoods with the highest pollution burdens. PERE's environmental justice screening method was cited as the "precursor to the state's screening tool." This data could help urge regulators to direct resources to communities often disproportionately affected by environmental hazards.

"Many of the worst pollution pockets identified and mapped by state officials are in the San Joaquin Valley, Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire. Their residents are largely low-income Latinos who have had little power to force improvements in their communities."
