New opportunities are blooming at the Missouri School of Journalism this spring. We’ve been busy bringing people together for the last few months, from a documentary journalism alumni event in the run-up to the True/False Film Fest to a massive survey of journalists — led by the Reynolds Journalism Institute — on the subject of burnout. Read on to learn more about what has been happening in our community.

Alumni spanning generations are coming together to support a new fundraising initiative: the Mary Kay Blakely New York Program Fund. The fund honors Blakely, who taught writing and magazine journalism at the J-School for 17 years. Through student scholarships and other support for our New York Program, the fund perpetuates Blakely’s legacy of generosity and helps strengthen a cornerstone of the J-School’s “study away” opportunities. We hope you'll consider making a gift today.

Professor Jon Stemmle co-authored a research paper examining how public relations professionals actually use artificial intelligence in their work. The paper finds that while uptake of machine learning tools remains slow, the industry is beginning to make use of their abilities to assist — not replace — PR professionals. Stemmle is also bringing AI into the classroom to help students learn to use it responsibly.

DETOUR, Professor Ron Stodghill’s Black travel magazine, is engaging J-School students for the publication’s next big reporting project, which is following an initiative in St. Louis to fight the displacement impacts of gentrification. Students at KBIA-FM are turning audio interviews into a radio series, while students in Stodghill’s capstone course are on the ground in St. Louis to capture the community’s stories.

Professor Kathy Kiely accepted the 2024 Mel Carnahan Public Service Award in February. The honor recognizes Kiely’s impact on Missouri through public service, including her lengthy history of supporting oppressed and persecuted journalists all over the world. She said the award is particularly meaningful for what it represents: recognition of journalism’s importance to society from outside the journalism industry.
