ELYSIAN NEEDS YOU
Elysian Charter School is one of the proud, original charter schools in New Jersey. It has been more than twenty years since the enactment of the Charter School Program Act of 1995. The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) is embarking in a statewide special review of the charter law to gather public feedback on New Jersey’s approach to charter schools, reevaluate what aspects of charter school implementation are most important to communities.
This review could lead to cuts in charter funding, loss of access to school buildings, and more charter school closures and we need you to make your voices heard! The deadline to sign up to attend a public meeting is Friday, October 19th!
WE NEED YOU to act now and get involved.
We do not know what will ultimately happen, what will change in the regulations or law but we do know that unless we speak up and advocate, those who don’t appreciate Charter Schools will have their voices heard by the DOE and not ours.
Here’s how you can get involved NOW:
• We need at least 10 parents to attend a town hall, public meeting in Jersey City on November 2nd from 5-7pm, location TBA. If you can attend, email us at diane.desombre@ecsnj.org The deadline to sign up to attend is Friday, October 19th.
• You can submit written feedback by going to: https://www.nj.gov/education/outreach/ • Register to attend a focus group or webinar.
Check your student’s back pack for additional information sent home today

I Love My Charter
OUR STUDENTS ARE BEING DEEPLY UNDERFUNDED:
Because of the way New Jersey’s school funding laws are set up, public charter schools receive zero dollars in facilities funding from the state. This means they are forced to spend dollars on facilities that could be used in our classrooms - more than $47 million in 2017 alone.
This means our children are being funded like second-class students. They’re being funded at just 73 cents on the dollar compared to other public school students.
HOW DO WE FIX IT?
The state of New Jersey is about to embark on a comprehensive review of charter school laws.
We need to mobilize, to make sure Commissioner of Education Lamont Repollet knows that we won’t stand for our students being treated unfairly, and demand fair funding now.
WE NEED YOU:
Over the course of the next few months, we need you to get active. Here’s how you can help:
● Visit charterstrongnj.org to sign up for our email list and contact the Commissioner
● Follow CharterStrong on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram ● Sign up to speak at a public meeting and demand fair funding for our kids
Join us TODAY at charterstrongnj.org!

Trivia Night Fundraiser Ticket Info:
• Tickets are for Elysian parents only through Friday, October 26, after which, if any tickets are unsold, sales will be opened to non-Elysian friends, extended family, and the public.
• No tickets will be sold at the door since teams need to be set up in advance.
• Each team will be made up of six (6) members, but you can buy any number of tickets. Creating Teams:
You can put together a full team of six members yourself, either buying the tickets in one purchase or, if the tickets are bought separately, utilizing the registration form (or emailing us at friends@ecsnj.org) to list your team’s players.
You can also include less than six names, too, and we’ll add others to your team to round it out. Deadline for emailing all team preferences is Friday, November 2.
Teams will be created for everyone who buys a ticket. (In other words, you don’t need to come with your own six-member team. We’ll put people together.) We will do our best to accommodate team requests, but as it is first come, first served, please let your team members know that their spots are not guaranteed until payment is received.

| A note about attendance: The New Jersey State Law is very specific about school attendance. By law, children are expected to be in school every day unless they are ill. There is no room in the law or regulations to excuse any children who have prior plans. We must mark all children absent who are not in attendance.
