Best of Film at Mason 

Thank you to everyone who supported us during our Best of Film at Mason traveling showcase. We wrapped up our last event at Washington West Film Festival on October 14th.

Film at Mason Census

ReelAbilities Film Festival: Northern Virginia 

Join Mason Exhibitions Arlington and ReelAbilities Film Festival: Northern Virginia on November 4 from 2-4pm for a film screening of 2 short films and 1 feature film documenting the lives of those who identify as disabled. The ReelAbilities Film Festival promotes awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories, and artistic expressions of people with disabilities.

Alumni News

Kwanza Gooden’s ‘13 documentary series Black Beauty Effect started streaming on Netflix on October 15th.  Featuring appearances from Meagan Good, Amber Riley, and other beauty influencers and executives, the series explores how influential Black professionals in the beauty industry challenged and redefined standards around their representation. 
Tony Marquez’s ‘12 short film FilAM has been making the festival circuit and doing very well. It has been recognized at Studio City Film Festival, Awesome Con Short Film Festival, Columbia Film Festival, Canadian Film Festival Cinematography Awards, Hollywood Blvd Film Festival, and Big Sur Film Festival. 
Yves Beneche ‘15 was recently featured in a Mason article written by Film at Mason Advisory Board member Kiley Kraskouskas. Since graduating from Mason, Yves has been busy working on the West Coast, gaining experience on sets such as Queen Sugar, Black-ish, and Grown-ish. His short film Bwa Kayiman is on the festival circuit right now. It premiered in New York at the Chelsea Film Festival on October 14th. 

Faculty Achievement 

Teaching Assistant and Film at Mason Alum Leonard Collins recently traveled to Detroit for the Detroit Black Film Festival. His film EXIT screened in the shorts program on September 28, 2023.
Professor Samirah Alkassim participated on the "Research as Repair: A Panel Discussion with CHR's Summer 2023 Faculty Funding Recipients" hosted by the Center for Humanities Research at George Mason, where she shared her book project and participated in a lively discussion with fellow panelists about democracy, disposability, and research as repair.

  • The Kodak Short Film Fund is offering grants of up to $10,000 toward the production costs of short film content, scripted or doc. Deadline: Oct. 31  
  • The PBS/Firelight William Greaves Production Fund provides funds for docs created by mid-career filmmakers from diverse communities. Deadline: Nov. 1 
  • The Catapult Research Grant offers $10,000 and mentorship to filmmakers in the early conception phase of a documentary feature or short. Deadline: Nov. 3 
  • WAVE Grant awards seed money to emerging female and non-binary filmmakers of color for the production of their short film. Deadline: Dec. 1
