Joshua 10:12-13
On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
So the sun stood still,
    and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.
The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.

New International Version (NIV)
What was the longest day of your life?  I remember traveling back from overseas once when I experienced something like a thirty-six hour day.  The day seemed to never end and I was exhausted.  Some days go quickly and others drag.

The story in Joshua tells us of a day that was extended to give victory to his people.  Remember the people of Gibeon tricked Israel into a non-aggression alliance.  A coalition of Amorite kings decided to attack Gibeon.  Israel defended their allies.  God gave his people victory.  As the battle wore on, Joshua was running out of time, so he asked God to extend the day.  The sun and moon stopped in the sky until the battle was won.

We are not exactly sure how this happened.  Some believe the day just felt longer.  Others say God rearranged the cosmos for a day to enable his purpose to be accomplished.  The story doesn’t say that the day felt longer but that it became longer.  Honestly, I am not sure how God did it.  I do take exception with those who say God can not interfere with the laws of nature.  He created the world and he can change it as he chooses.

Those who choose the god of science over the God of scriptures often posit an irreconcilable divide between the scriptures and science.  What we know for sure is that anyone who chooses to go against God will have a very long day, indeed.  Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.  We can trust our trustworthy God to do whatever it takes to accomplish his purposes.
Pray with me:
Father, forgive us for putting you in boxes and trying to reduce you to a manageable size.  You are sovereign King over all you created, including us.  Help us to use every second of every minute of every hour of every day to give you glory.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
