Message From the CEO
Read - Pause - Think - React
A while back, I participated on a panel of "seasoned" nonprofit executives presenting to a group of young professionals in a leadership development program. Eager for "expert" advice, during the Q & A, one of the emerging leaders asked the panelists: "What advice would you give us about managing communications and relationships in the workplace?"
Each of the three of us on the panel had an opportunity to respond. A number of good thoughts were shared. At my turn, I focused on the enhanced immediacy of our digital age and how difficult it can be to take back something said and shared. My advice was simple: If you receive an email that causes you distress or anger, wait 24 hours before you respond.
In the age of Twitter, the urge is great to react in the moment. By tomorrow, we'll be multiple news cycles later and no one will care. We watch as many public figures engage in “Twitter wars,” much to our entertainment and dismay. But there are real consequences to this type of instant, emotion-laden response. If we adopt that rhythm of communications in our professional lives, we will, not only, create personal conflict, but also damage our organizations. Better to read – pause – think – and then respond.
Lee Sherman, President & CEO
Of Note...
Legislation to Improve the Health and Well-Being of Children Through Baby Boxes, and More
In August, Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX) introduced the Baby Box and Maternal Assistance Act (H.R.4201), which aims to remedy high rates of infant mortality in the United States. This legislation would create a grant program that would provide funding for newborn care training to expecting parents, the services of certified Doulas or Midwives, as well as the distribution of a “Baby Box.” A “Baby Box” is a package for expecting parents with a collection of baby products and educational materials, and the box itself is also designed to serve as a sturdy and mobile sleeping space for an infant’s first months of life. The Center for Disease Control estimates that more than a quarter of 3,600 sudden unexplained infant deaths (SUID) in 2017 were directly attributed to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed. As of 2019, baby box programs have been adopted in New Jersey and Ohio, and have been implemented at the local level in counties across the country. Read the full story on our blog.
Since its introduction, the Baby Box and Maternal Assistance Act has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. NHSA supports this bill because it would increase the availability of resources for all parents and children and improve their health and well-being.
